They asked to check on many other things which were unrelated (since other lights on the same switch worked, there was no possibility of an issue with my main board or smoke detectors or other outlets, all of which they checked). My sense is they charge $69 to come in look all over to sell more services, rather than fixing the problem or doing work for the money paid. They have laminated marketing materials stating that a real diagnosis (not fixing) of a problem will cost between $300 and $700 or more, rather than the $69 quoted over the phone."

"Tri State was prompt—they had a tech out within hours when our 20-year-old HVAC broke down. The repair estimate was $800–$1,200, and they also sent a salesman, Mike, to discuss replacement. Mike was courteous and knowledgeable, but, when we sat down to review the quote, the sales process turned into a bad car-buying experience. They started at $34,000, then "discounted" to $29,300—$10,000 -$12,000 higher than other quotes for the exact same unit. Even factoring in their warranty, they remained $8,000–$10,000 overpriced. Mike also claimed they were a four-generation family-owned business, but I later found out they’re owned by Sila Services, a Goldman Sachs private equity firm—which feels misleading. To their credit, canceling was easy (though I hadn’t signed a financing agreement or put money down). Bottom line: Get multiple quotes. Their pricing was excessive, and the sales tactics felt manipulative."

He went over a few issues on our older unit he found during his inspection. I never felt pressured to have the work done and so glad he resolved them on the same day.
