"Carlos was wonderful. He gave me a better price than others, and did more work. He repaired a door I had been told needed to be replaced and put 2 screws in a door handle I had been told needed to be replaced. Both work perfectly. He did all my projects perfectly and without me asking, he even bought paint to match a small area of wall. He left everything very clean."

"Jose and his crew (Thomas, Mario and Domingo) went above and beyond on these jobs. They remodeled my basement and bathroom. They showed up on time, were very respectful with my property and did amazing work. Communication was great throughout. They did some extra custom work in my bathroom, which really made the room pop! These are very talented craftsmen, who take pride in their work. I've already hired them on to more projects at my house because I know I can trust them. I can't recommend Jose and his team high enough. I'm super happy with the results."

Install Central Vacuum questions, answered by experts

The disadvantages associated with central vacuums start with cost. They are expensive to install, especially in existing homes, as retrofitting requires opening walls. The system's bulky hoses can also be inconvenient to maneuver and store compared to portable vacuums. Additionally, repairs may need professional service, adding to maintenance costs. Lastly, while powerful, they may be overkill for smaller homes or apartments, making the investment less practical for some households.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

For the average-size house, a central vacuum installation usually takes one day of work by a team of professionals. Large houses may take two or more days. But if you are planning on a DIY project, it’s likely to take much longer. We suggest getting a few estimates for a project this big and fully understanding all the requirements before you make a decision about installation. Certain parts of your house may not be usable during the installation, and you may want to make other plans.

No. Only the hose or the attachments are portable in a central vacuum system. A portable vacuum is a standalone model like a stick, canister, or upright. A central vacuum system is defined by a central power unit, which is installed in one place like an AC unit, and the connected network of piping to funnel the suction.

Technically, yes, you could install a central vacuum system on your own, but it is a very difficult DIY. There is a significant amount of planning, cutting into walls, and electrical wiring work that goes into it, which should only be performed by a professional. Because of the difficulty and expense associated with a central vacuum system, it’s worth it to hire a professional company familiar with the installation's complexities.
