"David and his team were very professional and the work they did was excellent---we could tell the difference the next day. The temperature on the 2nd floor is several degree lower than before due to the new insulation and feels much more comfortable. David has solid knowledge regarding insulation and he explains things clearly. Definitely would recommend David and Prudent Homes to my friends and neighbors."

"Comfenergy was very professional thorough from the in-person estimate thru installation. Even though we didnt have a full energy audit, they still go over your entire home and tell you what should and what needs to be done. Some of the little things we did ourselves, or had our handyman. Then Comfenergy did the big part, seal and insulate the attic. We still had late 80's insulation and never a sealing done. It ended up being over an 8 hour project. They were not the cheapest estimate, but definitely the most in-depth review and recommendations provided. The two man team that did the actual work were very professional, showed us the work as the progressed, and good clean up job after all was done."

"We had a great experience with Discount Energy Services. They insulated our entire attic and crawl space, and from start to finish they were professional, responsive, and easy to work with. The turnaround time was impressively quick, the quality of the work was excellent, and we felt the value was very good for the scope of the project. The team was efficient, knowledgeable, and clearly took pride in doing the job well. We really appreciated how smoothly the whole process went and would gladly recommend Discount Energy Services to anyone looking for high-quality insulation work."

"Fantastic experience with Kelvin. Very quick response for an initial estimate. Came out to check it out within a few hours. Also helped me out immensely by doing the job on the weekend which he normally doesn’t do! Definitely highly recommended!"

"Debbie, the AC&R salesperson, was very knowledgeable and confident. They were the 2nd quote I got for work and came in even lower than I expected (which gave me pause as a low bid is a red flag). But true to her word, they did the work professionally (mostly...see below) and promptly. While I had another company do the energy audit for the Pepco rebate, AC&R took over the work, did the blown fiberglass one day and the spray foam the next.

For the blown fiberglass in the attics above our additions, they added spray foam (from a can) around any gaps per the contract and foam board baffles at the soffits. The installer noted that all our soffits were blocked and the batting insulation was too wide for the rafter channels, so he leveled it out as best he could to ensure an even coating of blown insulation. At the end, he sealed up the gaps between the attic and our to-be-finished upstairs (cape cod style, so all one room).

For the spray foam insulation, the team came in the next day, and I had to be out of the house due to fumes. I did come back around noon as they expected to be done well before then. They didn't know I came in and I went to the back of the house to watch TV on my work break. The one annoyance was during their cleanup, one of the installers came down into our kitchen and then saw me. He said he was looking for a vacuum cleaner to clean the stairs. I told him don't worry about the carpet as it was getting pulled up, but this was the one piece of unprofessionalism I noted above. Contractors should NEVER use the homeowner's property; they should bring their own tools, including vacuums!

While the spray foam can get very messy, they kept the splatter mostly contained to inside the crawlspace, not the finished flooring. However, I was surprised that they didn't tape off the outlet covers or light switched. since the particles are so small, we're going to have to replace the switches/receptacles at our cost. Also, there was a storm door screen that wasn't covered and now needs cleaned. Basically, I think they should have taken more care in covering the very few items we left upstairs and the outlets/switches.

They didn't spray around the window frames (large gaps where window weights used to be) because the open cell foam would expand too much. If I wasn't there, I think they would have just left, but it was clear in our contract discussions they needed to insulate those spaces too. They used a few cans of "Good Stuff" equivalent, but didn't fill in the gaps entirely. It did the job well enough, but it's a ding against them as I expected more preparation.

Lastly, I thought that AC&R would walk me through all the scheduling and final "test out" (for the Pepco rebate), but I had to contact them and schedule with someone different each time. They were always prompt, but I expect the experts to know to do this for/with me rather than expect me to know the process. I go through it once in a lifetime while they do it weekly.

While the end of the review sounds more negative than positive, I would definitely recommend AC&R out to others as they're priced right, they have been in business for over a century, and like any contractor, you just need to follow up to be sure everything is done to your satisfaction.

"The work that Metro Insulation, LLC did was well done. The contractor was very kind. I was a new member of Angie's List at that time. I didn't really understand so much what the big deal was. It wasn't a very large break in the price, but it wasn't a tremendous amount of money so I was glad we did this. I would recommend the company. The insulation they installed did end up making our house warmer. The price was considerably more than what I expected it to be, but I really wanted to get this done so I didn't comparison shop. I would shop around more before making a decision whether I would use them again."

"The work was approached in a thoughtful way and executed carefully.  The repair anticipated trouble that had not yet developed into a problem.  The solution is attractive, simple and durable.  The cost of the job was very fair and reasonable.
In addition, +Energy had done work for us previously.  That was phase I of an energy efficiency "retrofit" of our dwelling, an inexpensive construction dating to the post WWII years which is pathetically inefficient from an energy perspective.  The house sits over a crawl space and phase I involved a significant upgrade to the vapor barrier over the soil "floor" of the space, closed-cell foam insulation of the foundation wall perimeter and installation of air circulation and venting so as to maintain a consistent level of humidity in the space and avoid mold and mildew formation that could produce odors that could affect air quality in the living space.  The pricing was very competitive with respect to other estimates and extras were thrown in for the originally-agreed price -- Wow! - we certainly didn't insist on that.  This work was done during the summer, but +Energy has been out a couple of times since to verify that the system is working properly, including this last visit to work on the dormer.  As a result of this visit, they are helping us trouble-shoot a plumbing problem that is unrelated to the crawl space ventilation problem.
In summary, they are enthusiastic, idealistic (they really believe in "green" and in doing a project right), competent and a pleasure to deal with.

"The initial energy audit took ~4 hours and the technician, Andre was punctual, professional and sat down with me to explain the process at the beginning and end of the audit.
I then met with a manager the following week to review the results of the audit and the proposed services. I was also informed of the state energy rebate and the availability of a 0% interest rate loan to have the work performed. I qualified for a $2,000 rebate and a $5,000 loan. I elected to have all proposed services performed.
The loan process was automated, efficient and the scheduling process was efficient.
Mike and Devin arrived on time, were professional and considerate of my home as the spent 3 days insulating my garage ceiling, attic and crawl space. Baffles were installed in the rafters to ensure proper ventilation of the attic, whilst all areas contacting the inside of my home ("the envelope") were sealed and insulated to code(and then some), including foam and blown in insulation. In the garage ceiling (below the living room), the 10" space only had 6" of insulation. Holes were drilled in the drywall and insul ation was blown in. The holes were then patched and spackled (not sanded). All seams between the cinder block walls and drywall were sealed with foam and the exposed pipes were wrapped.
A manager came out the following week to inspect the work performed. He noted several punchlist items and deferred the blower door test until these items were completed. This was scheduled promptly and completed achieving the targeted airflow reduction in the proposal. This report is being sent to the state to verify the rebate and my home may be selected for a state audit.
Overall I am very pleased with the work performed. My home holds the heat much more effectively. I highly recommend the Mark Group.

"I called Evergreen Electric and setup an appointment for the next day to perform what I figured would be a couple small jobs and to receive an estimate to run cable into new rooms. The original appointment was delayed because of a power outage on another job, but speaking to Josh on the phone, he was willing to come by as soon as he was finished even though it would have been well into the evening. I told him the following day would work fine and we rescheduled the appointment.
Josh arrived the next day and examined our situation. Our house is nearly 40 years old and it turns out the problems were much deeper than I thought. Josh crawled into the attic and rewired the junction boxes that were not just loose but had previously been wired incorrectly. He also spent well over an hour attempting to diagnose why our breaker was tripping without much of a load on it. He was very thorough in his troubleshooting. He replaced the breaker with a higher amp version and the problem is fixed, but he also indicated there is likely more faulty wiring running through the attic buried under the insulation and someone should come back to assess the entire electrical system.
Josh was very courteous and professional and answered all of my questions. After spending about 2.5 hours with us, I was expecting a large bill. I was very pleased when he told me he would only be billing me for one hour.
About 30 minutes after he left, we noticed that a light in the hallway would not turn off. I called to report it and Evergreen responded immediately. Josh came back right away and fixed the problem. He even replaced the light switch free of charge. It is nice to see a company that stands by its work and acts so quickly when something is wrong.
I would highly recommend Evergreen Electric. They are prompt, thorough, and stand by their work.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The primary downside of radiant barriers is their limited effectiveness in cold climates. They are designed to reflect radiant heat, making them less beneficial in cooler conditions where heat retention is more important.

Radiant barriers require proper installation to maximize effectiveness. Incorrect placement can lead to minimal benefits. They also do not provide insulation, meaning they should be used in conjunction with traditional insulation for optimal energy efficiency.

Yes. Proper, complete insulation will ensure that you trap the most cool or warm air inside your home, preventing high energy bills. In addition, insulation tends to settle and compress, leaving gaps over time; the more you insulate completely during the initial installation, the less you’ll need to do down the line.

Yes, insulating hot water pipes helps your system run more efficiently. This is especially true in basements in colder climates, where cold air likes to settle in. There are a few ways to insulate water pipes (foam is common) to keep hot water hot, reducing the need for your water heater to constantly heat the water in the tank or your circulator to kick on more than necessary.

Yes, products made from renewable resources and with reduced chemical impacts.

Minimal, mainly occasional checks for damage or mold in extreme conditions.
