"Excellent job! It was clear they are experienced carpenters and painters and take pride in producing quality results. Brothers Carpentry and Paint replaced one exterior door with framing and replaced several interior doors. This included new knobs and for some doors, new hinges. They also painted many of the interior doors. They also made some sheet rock and baseboard repairs for us. Carlos was wonderful to work with, professional and patiently answered any questions I had. Will definitely call them for future projects and would highly recommend them!"

Small jobs welcome

"Excellent workmanship in wall prep & repair for my interior painting job (behind wall framing needed to be added & he was experienced in framing). The work space was always kept clean. Had front entry rails repaired & painted as well. This contractor has excellent tools & equipment for making totally professional repairs. Such professional service has earned Allen another job for repairs of my home."

"I hired Register Repair Services to repair my 35 years old deck. They did splendid job and though there were few days delay due to medical issues they finished the job very well. They responded to questions with patience and professionalism. Would hire them again and recommend the crew to anyone wanting to build new deck. Overall, quality work at affordable price. "Overall the service was good. Our deck and porch look much better. We had some areas where stain overspray needed cleaning. It was a bit difficult getting them back out to do the clean up. Communication could have been more timely on the follow-up cleaning."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Framing a basement takes three to five days, on average, when completed by a professional, though it may take longer for a larger space. Keep in mind this doesn’t include the time to complete the design, obtain permits, and install the drywall on the framing. On average, fully finishing a basement takes an average of 45 days.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

For maximum stability, install grab bars on wall studs, as this will adequately support the weight. However, if you don't have access to studs, you can get by with wall anchors. If opting for the latter, choose specialty hollow wall anchors.
