"Artisan Roofing was great from start to finish. Dustin was my rep and was fantastic. He took time to explain their process, answer any questions and relay any important information during the install. They were able to complete the roof in one day despite some additional carpentry repairs that were needed. Roof looks great! We love the charcoal black color."

Customers say: True professional

"Clyde and his team provided excellent work, good management of subcontractors, and a fair price. All were highly responsive to our concerns and questions. The job was performed as bid and completed on schedule. Clyde did not try to "upsell" us on pricey upgrades of questionable value. We needed a good roof replacement on our 20 year old house, some carpentry repairs, and gutters that won't clog with debris, and that's exactly what we got. The site cleanup, performed daily, was exemplary."

"We have a flat EPDM roof over our family room that had a leak and was nearing the end of its effective life. In speaking with several companies, we learned that only some of them make repairs to EPDM roofs and fewer companies actually replace them. We chose American Craftsmen and could not have been happier with their service. This is a company that not only answers their phone, but is happy to answer your questions and is friendly, knowledgeable, thorough and professional. When they had something to check on, they got back to you in a timely manner. Their crew who did the installation arrived in the timeframe we were promised, and they were also friendly, knowledgeable and professional, and cleaned up their mess when they were done. Another reason we liked using them for our roof project is they were able to replace a faulty gutter and a broken piece of siding hanging down on the roof, precluding us from having to find someone else to do that. We will be calling American Craftsmen when we want to replace our siding and windows. They take pride in how they do things, and it’s easy to see why they have so many great reviews. Peter & Gina Cary, NC"

"Recently had our roof replaced by A&M Premier Roofing Co. Originally met with one of the owners who explained the work, and process of the entire project which followed soon after. From estimate to completion of work, this company was great to work with! They installed a beautiful roof. The installation crew was right on time, and finished within a specified time - all very friendly, professional, skilled and very efficient. They were meticulous with their clean up - no trash, and no nails. Thank you A&M Premier Roofing Co. owners, office staff, and especially to the roof installers/crew; couldnâ  t wish for a better experience! Ruth Z."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

In Durham, unexpected roofing costs may include structural repairs discovered during tear-off, fees for permit revisions, and expenses from weather-related delays. Additional charges can arise for code-required upgrades, debris removal, or emergency roof repair if damage is found mid-project. The City of Durham's permitting process may also require extra inspections, so discussing these possibilities with your roofing contractor helps you plan ahead.

Helpful?

Roofing in Durham benefits from routine maintenance, such as inspecting for storm damage each spring and fall, clearing gutters to prevent water backup, and checking attic ventilation. The North Carolina Department of Insurance recommends scheduling a professional roof inspection every five years and after major storms. Promptly addressing minor repairs and keeping debris off the roof extends its lifespan and helps prevent costly roof repair needs.

Helpful?

In Durham, a permit is required for roof replacement, structural changes, or major roof repairs, as outlined by the City of Durham's One-Stop Development Services. Permit applications must be approved before work begins, and inspections are scheduled during and after the project. Only licensed contractors can request inspections, ensuring compliance with Durham's building codes and safety standards.

Helpful?

When hiring for roofing in Durham, prioritize contractors licensed by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors and with a verifiable local business address. Ask for recent references from Durham homeowners and confirm the roofer's insurance coverage. Look for manufacturer certifications and experience with local weather challenges. According to the North Carolina Department of Insurance, avoid contractors who request full payment upfront or lack clear written contracts.

Helpful?

Durham's humid subtropical climate, with frequent storms and high summer heat, affects both material selection and project timing. According to the National Weather Service, it's best to schedule roofing projects in spring or fall to avoid peak storm and heat periods. Durable materials like architectural shingles or metal roofing are recommended, while proper attic ventilation and moisture barriers help protect against local weather extremes.
