"Our project was to replace a deck with a new larger one and build a roof over it. I was nervous about hiring a contractor but Hugo was recommended by a friend. « Go with Hugo, he did a superb job of carpentry in my house ! ». I am so grateful to her! I did hire Hugo. As for his work, the words “top-notch”, “first-rate” come to mind. He and his crew are outstanding professionals. The whole construction was done with such care and proficiency. My husband and I are delighted with the result. Hugo’s work was not inexpensive but I did not want to end up with a car port ! Considering that we got exactly what we wanted, with the quality of both material and workmanship, we felt it was a fair deal. Also, I appreciated Hugo’s passion for his own work and the advice of an experienced builder. As a bonus, he was completely trustworthy, showing up when he said he would, meeting all date-lines, explaining small delays while waiting for Inspections from our County, etc… and taking care of “everything”, like permits or attending to last minute requests. And then, there is another aspect of the total experience: giving us peace of mind instead of worries.. That, to me, was very valuable."

"Overall, very well. Mike is a very nice, capable, honest guy in all respects. I did a major remodel of our master bath room in a high-end home and it came out excellent. The carpentry-finish work was particularly well done and the entire bathroom looks exceptional. My only complaint was they crew was very messy and did not prepare the house well for the project, that caused some issues, but Mike acknowledged the problem and said he learned from it, and I believe that was the case. Overall, it was quality work well done at a fair price with no games, no gimmicks. That far outweighed the issues of prep-cleaning for me."

"The evaluation and repair went extremely well. Alexis had to open up three areas to assess the water damage. We knew one window had to be replaced but he uncovered some structural supports that were damaged and had to be replaced. He also had to completely rebuild the framing for one window and then he reinstalled that window as well as a second window so that the windows matched. He spent about two weeks slowly jacking up the house so he could take the weight off of the structural supports and then he replaced the damaged supports. He added some floor joists; had to remove, replace and repair sheetrock; as well as removing and replacing the wood molding in various places. He also mad some modifications to the roof of the sunroom so that the water damage problem would not recur. He did some of the work himself and had two employees that did the rest of the work. All of the work that was done was carried out professionally and carefully. When the crew was there, they worked diligently on each element of the repair. The bay window was the area that was the majority of the problem, and that area looks brand new after they completed the repairs. I would recommend B & D Remodeling to anyone looking to do repairs or remodeling. He and his crew first rate work on a challenging project and I thought his pricing seemed quite reasonable, especially considering that he could not see what the issues were until he began the repair. Alexis, Carlos and Mario were friendly throughout the process. Generally they were good about letting me know what time they planned to be at the house to work on the repairs. I am hoping to get them back to do some additional work for us in the near future."

"All the above responses were excellent and the job was done well and quickly. Been trying to do this job myself for near a decade and finally accepted the fact that I needed help. Joe Marshall at Prime Time Custom Homes, LLC called me the same day and offered his services. I accepted his free estimate and he assembled and arranged the materials delivery and craftsmen the same week. The efficiency of the crew finished the job in less than five hours. They did good work. Started at 8:30am and finished by 1:00 pm.. The job was a 26’ by 8’ deck roof , shingles and enclosed beaded plywood underneath so as to hide nails and rafters. All I have to do is trim, stain and paint to myself and the wife's liking. So pleased to know that this level of quality work is obtainable in these times. Thank you Joe Marshall."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.

While some highly experienced homeowners can frame a house independently, it is not advisable. You will need ample carpentry experience, a team of helpers, and professionals to sign off on your work to meet local building codes. For the safest outcome, we recommend buying or building a house with the guidance of professionals.
