Small jobs welcome

"Allen is very reliable, responsible and skilled, completing work from carpentry to painting, in my home. He did an amazing job on a multitude of projects - He installed two wood handrails, hand cut pickets, and put in a wood post. In addition to this, he installed a garage hook, stain painted my outdoor deck, resealed the silicone around the glass of the shower, sealed my garage floor, fixed baseboards and shoe molding, installed bathroom hooks, and replaced the chipped tile in my shower. I highly recommend his services and would definitely hire him again. Lastly, Tabatha does a great job of scheduling."

"Chris Miller came to my home and provided an estimate for cleaning and staining my deck.  He helped me explore options, like removing the remnants of a mostly-removed layer of surface stain that a previous owner had put on and partially taken off, matching the color of the remaining stain so as to save money by avoiding the expense of removal, etc.  He also advised me about what was realistic for treatment of the concrete patio below the deck.  Chris was knowledgeable and helpful.  He didn't pressure me to do anything more expensive than necessary, in fact encouraged me that we could try to match the remaining stain and if necessary do the removal and update the stain treatment later on.  He offered to include treatment of the portion of the concrete patio that most needed it at a reduced price as part of the job.  The price he quoted was fair, I believe, though it turned out to be higher than I can afford at the moment, given the press of some other expenses I'm facing, so I did not have them do the work.  If I need deck treatment in the future though, particularly when I have more available funds, I will seriously consider having them do the work.  Based on my interaction with Chris, and with the nice lady in the office named Aaliya, I would recommend them.

"Henry and his crew are beyond courteous, professional, and pay precise attention to detail. I originally hired H and M to stain my fence but had another emergency that Henry also ended up taking on. First, the fence stain looks GREAT. The team power washed the fence clean of debris, then returned after it was dry to apply the stain. They used the proper staining technique and paid specific attention to detail. They wrapped all items near the fence that could not be moved to protect it from unwanted stain. The job is VERY clean and neat and the fence looks great! I was offered a variety of stains and Henry helped me with any questions I had. In addition, I also had to have my door replaced. Henry was not originally scheduled to do this but politely agreed when he saw my need. He replaced the entire door and frame, including trim and paint. The paint job was VERY neat and professional and the trim replacement and caulking make it look seamless. I cannot express how grateful I am for their quick reply in my time of need and their keen attention to detail no matter what task they are given. I cannot recommend these guys enough! I have found my go-to contractor. Their attention to detail, professionalism, and overall outgoing personalities set them high above anyone else."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, most services include necessary frame modifications for proper door fitting. Confirm with your provider.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

Yes, professionals can install new frames, trim, and threshold adjustments for a complete finish.
