"Allen is an excellent carpenter; we had the banister & railing updated; along with the stair threads. We also had the risers reinforced. Hands down, very happy with Allen & his services. My neighbors were so impressed; they also hired him."

"AHI renovated our master bathroom and bedroom suite. Our bathroom is now stunningly spectacular. The bedroom like new. This family run business is very friendly, courteous, professional, and skilled in many crafts that include: drywall, frame reconstruction, tiling, cabinet installation, plumbing, vaulted ceiling repair, electrical and much more. Irshad and Nanda helped us with design options as well as recommendations for tile, shower door enclosure, cabinetsâ all at a great value and quality. Irshad's son, Billy, managed the on-site work with assistance from his brother Matt and Raoul to form a truly amazing team. Billyâ s expertise and vision made a huge difference in the project. End of each day, they cleaned up after themselves and were true to their word on prompt completion. Any minor extras after finishing, they were right back to take care of it. We definitely will use them again and highly recommend them to others."

"Ferney renovated my whole house. The work included internal wall removal; complete bathrooms' renovation including tiling and fixtures; full kitchen renovation including cabinet planning and installation, island installation, and tiling; pocket door installation; hardwood floors installation; wiring and electric work including recessed lights; carpentry and painting. His last work was building a new wooden deck on the existing foundation. The work was done on the highest level both in terms of the skills and mastery, communication, and the level of trust. Ferney truly took care of my house as though it was his own - no shortcuts or sloppiness, including putting everything in orderly organized way at the end of each day. He has a lot of experience and he suggested many useful features. Personally he is an exceptionally honest and sincere person, and he is a pleasure to work with. He is the first person on my list for the work that is needed in the house."

"Smithwright was excellent.  I found Smithwright on Angie's List.  I own a rental property in College Park and wanted to prepare it for sale.  Over a six month period, I engaged Smithwright to fix many cosmetic and minor structural items.  Bill Smith was perfect for the job; he worked independently, helped me identify things that needed to be done; communicated what the expected expenses would be, and when things went over provided detailed explanations.  Best of all, he worked great with the tenants and got all the work done on the schedule I wanted to put the house on the market.  I was able to put my complete trust in him, and he delivered.  Thanks Bill!!!"

"I have been searching for a fence installer for months, and I was thrilled to finally hear back from Simmons Handyman Services. Most of the estimates I received were way too high, and I felt like they weren't really listening to what I wanted. Demetrius, on the other hand, not only listened to my needs but also gave me some great recommendations on how to save money on the project. He was responsive, selected the materials needed online - I paid for via the cart link - picked it up and carted the old fence away. The fence turned out even more attractive than I had imagined. I will definitely be using his services again for future projects."

"Mr. Diaz and his crew did a beautiful job painting our new home, both the interior and exterior, as well as the interior of our old apartment. The prior condition of the exterior paint was very rough, and took a lot of preparation before they could paint. The crews were friendly, professional and conscientious about their work. They were punctual, showed up and worked consistently until the job was done. When we wanted to use a special finish on our floors, he found the people who could do it and made the arrangements, keeping costs very reasonable and competitive with other estimates. The end results look fabulous. Highly recommended."

"I worked with Junior and Sharon to design the plan and pick out materials. The design was a bit unconventional and required moving walls, piping and rerouting plumbing and electrical to keep a tub and add a double vanity. Junior and Sharon were professional, responsive and very enjoyable to work with. Their connections with tile, paint and supplies made selecting the products easy and fun, as well. They have a great eye for detail and design! Junior had stated it would take 6 to 8 weeks to complete my project. As most projects have issues that come up, I anticipated it would take longer. I was more than pleasantly surprised when the job completed in just 5 weeks, including a week "off" due to my vacation and waiting on a backorder. Junior's estimation was right on the money! Finishing the job earlier than expected is amazing. Once the project began, Jason, the general contractor, gave daily updates by phone in the evening and came to the job nearly every day to handle the project. Jason is professional, prompt in responding and easy to work with. On site, Henry, the crew leader, was also very professional, pleasant to work with and very responsive to the needs of his workers, the project and my requests. The entire crew was just as professional and pleasant to work with. Each day, they came promptly, set up, polite to each other, my family and home, worked efficiently and professionally, then cleaned up each evening before leaving. The entire staff of VKB Kitchen and Bath were amazing to work with. But even more to the point, their workmanship was top notch. Every detail was taken care of from paint matching, molding work, drywall and finish work, material setting, care of materials and the finished project turned out better than I had expected. I've worked with many contractors over the years. I recommend few to others and do not write reviews for most. That is not the case with VKB Kitchen and Bath. I recommend them for any kitchen and bath job you may need done for your home. From the moment you step in to work with the designers to the final completion certification, you will find that the staff and crew are nothing short of excellent. (Photos attached. I am not a professional photographer. Any lack of quality (including reflection in the glass) is from the photographer, not the new bathrooms!)"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

House framing can be expensive because the materials are pricey, and the job requires a high level of expertise. The more complex the plans, the more expensive the job, but even the most basic frame needs to be installed with high-quality materials and precision. When pricing your home’s framework, remember that a sturdy frame is necessary to create a safe structure.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Professionals ensure precise alignment and durability, critical for structural integrity.
