"It went spectacularly well! Lori Parisi, the designer, met with us, listened to our needs, suggested certain closet organization configurations and gave us our choices for types of materials. She designed a plan which was in keeping with our needs and our pocketbook. The installer, Eric, came on time, worked conscientiously and efficiently and got it all done in a timely way with no problems. He cleaned up after his work, and was kind enough to cart away the old materials."

Small jobs welcome

"Tony did a lot in three days: refinished the floors in two rooms, painted, removed an old washer/dryer unit and built shelves in the alcove. We have been looking for months for someone reliable to do work on our place in Sperryville. Tac's Handy Services is the answer. We highly recommend!"

"JC Closets was quick to respond on my initial contact.  Javier came by to look at my closets, took measurements and asked for clarity on what I wanted.  He sent drawings and an estimate by email within a couple of days.  His quote was competitive and his reviews were favorable.  My husband and I are extremely satisified with the work which was completed on the agreed upon date.  The project was handled efficiently and professionally.

"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"Majestic did a fine job.  The crew was professional and efficient, working over two days to pack-out the old house and do the move the following day.  Packing was well done, nothing was broken, and boxes all made it to the proper rooms in the new home.  One minor issue concerning wardrobe boxes: we were informed that a separate charge ($10 per box) would be assessed if they were not unpacked by the time the move was completed.  This was difficult to accomplish since the closets were used by the crew to place boxes designated for each of the bedrooms.  However, the charge could be credited once we emptied the boxes and called Majestic to come back and retrieve them, which we did following after a couple of days of unpacking.  Majestic came by the next day after I called, and picked up the wardrobe boxes, as well as a large number of additional boxes and packing paper.  Again, not a big deal...just something to be aware of on move day."

"The bathrooms look terrific. His people started when promised and worked on a Saturday to finish up the job. We were having a hard time picking a color to match an accent tile with a speckled pattern. The automatic color match device at the paint store wasn't coming up with the right color. One of the people working the job helped pick out the perfect color.

"From the start, it was a great experience.  Our first call was returned promptly, we set up a time for an estimate, and Rick Hall arrived on time for the estimate.  Rick gave us a great price. Originally, we were going to prime the drywall ourselves, but Rick's price was so good, we decided to include it in the work.Rick and his crew arrived as scheduled, brought the drywall in and the sheetrock in the entire basement was hung in one day.  The next day a different crew arrived to tape and begin finishing the drywall.  This took a couple of days as the mud had to dry in between applications, and then sanded. After that, the priming was done.We couldn't be more pleased with the work done by Hall's Drywall and Painting.  The crews were punctual and professional and their work was excellent.  We were very comfortable leaving them alone in our home to work, and they always locked up when they left. They left our home as clean as possible every day.The drywall is beautiful.  There is an artistry to finishing drywall, and our basement is a work of art!We were so pleased with the finished drywall that we asked Rick to give us a quote to paint the ceilings and walls.  His crew arrived and two coats were completed in one day.We can highly recommend Halls and will definitely call Rick the next time we need any drywall or painting done."

Closets questions, answered by experts

There are a few reasons custom closets are expensive: materials used, the luxury factor, and time to build. The people who can afford custom closets are those who can afford increased rates, and construction workers and contractors know this and charge accordingly. The time to build custom closets is substantial, especially if expensive material is being used or intricate details (like carved wood) are added to the project.

The time it takes to build a closet varies widely depending on the project's size, complexity, and level of customization. On average, construction can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.

A simple reach-in closet might be completed in less than a day, while a more complex walk-in closet could take one to two days or more. A typical project often falls in the 2-to-5-day range. However, a large, highly customized walk-in closet that requires structural changes, like moving a load-bearing wall, will take significantly longer.

A professional contractor can provide the most accurate time estimate for your specific project. If you are planning a DIY build, it is best to budget additional time.

How many days it takes to remodel a closet will also depend on the scale of the project. Small changes like installing a prefab kit will eat up an afternoon and no more, while a total renovation could require several days to a week. If you’re planning for the latter, plan to secure other sleeping arrangements while construction is ongoing.

Whether it’s less expensive to build or buy a closet depends on both the type of closet and whether or not you’d be constructing it yourself. The cost of custom closets built by a pro ranges from $1,300 to $3,800, but you may be able to DIY it for as little as $400. By contrast, prefabricated options go as low as $200 and up to $3,000, so it’s almost always less expensive to go this route.

Fortunately, there are no hard and fast rules or regulations regarding the height of closet shelving. However, the typical height for a single closet shelf with a hanging bar is 70 inches from the floor. For a double-hanging system, use 84 to 85 inches from the floor for the top one and 42 inches for the lower.
