"Chimney was cleaned and I am good to go for another 7-8 years. My dryer vent was almost completely clogged. Now that it has been cleaned I can rest easier knowing that it is not a fire hazard. The owner is very professional and courteous. He is very knowledgeable and provided me with some suggestions regarding the grate I currently have in my fireplace. He came recommended by a neighbor and I am So glad I reached out. I will definitely you him again."

"When they left after my cleaning my ac unit, I realized that one of my AC units was not operating. They didn't return the next day as promised to take a look at it, so I ended up having to call my home warranty company to come take a look. Also, just note that the vent cleaning they perform isn't with the large hoses connected to a big truck. They use small to mid-sized rolling shop vacuum to do the deep cleaning;"

"Josh with JT Chimney and Air was TERRIFIC!! He was prompt, personable and professional. He came prepared to do the job I requested and didn't try to oversell things I did not need right now, which others have done. Pricing was fair and the job was completed without a hitch. I would recommend JT Chimney and Air to anyone who needs anything done to prepare a fireplace for the coming winter."

"In short FABULOUS. In detail, I can't get over the difference. The project was scheduled to take approx 4 weeks. Derek personally oversaw the details and had a great and professional crew of people working for him. They took a lot of care in screening off my areas not under construction to contain the dust from the work. Hat was great especially since we were living in the house during he project. The demolition went quickly and his crew cleaned up after each work day. I'm kind of a neat freak so that really made a difference. Work progressed flawlessly with Derek contacting me daily to make sure I was kept completely current on everything being done. He would provide me with work summaries including forward planning to let me know what he next week would entail. During the remodel Derek took me to Dallas design shops for the tile, rock work, fixtures, and hand selected granite for the counters and the new hearthstone for the fireplace. HGTV come to life. I was very concerned about the overwhelming selections but through working with me Derek knew my taste and guided me to areas that really fit my taste. I must admit though I relied on him a great deal of the time as he had an amazing eye for design. I had a complete kitchen remodel including custom made cabinets, yes by Prestigious, lighting was replaced in its entirety in the kitchen and family room. He fireplace wall was refinished with rock from floor to ceiling. Derek installed hidden wiring for a TV mounted on the fireplace wall above the new mantle. They built a closet in he recess beside the fireplace with wiring installed for Internet cable and phone so none of he. lucky equipment is sitting out in sight. Yes it all works beautifully and has been the rave of my friends and neighbors. I also had Them reprint the exterior of the house. Yes that went well also. Throughout the construction they took great care to not damage my brand new flooring or my new appliances. I was greatly impressed with he entire job. Oh and here is a big shocker to me....,,the work was completed on schedule. To do that Derek's people worked 6 days a week. I can't say enough how great this turned out!!! The most telling thing I can say is not only will I recommend him, I'm having him do another project now. I'll keep you posted on his next project ( a new master bedroom and bathroom)."

Fireplace Cleaners questions, answered by experts

Regular HVAC filter changes, deep cleaning, and air quality monitoring help maintain a healthy environment.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

The most inexpensive option is to paint the brick facing of your existing fireplace. You can create an interesting design with the right color of paint, as long as the brick is in good shape. Sometimes, simply cleaning the brick fireplace makes a big difference in the way it looks. Otherwise, covering an existing stone, brick, or masonry fireplace facing with stucco or concrete is an inexpensive option versus tearing out the existing material and refacing the fireplace.

Hard materials like glass, metal, and hardwood floors, washable fabrics, and undamaged electrical appliances can often be salvaged after a fire, although it depends on the extent of the damage. For washable fabrics, make sure to use a phosphate mix during the washing process to extract the smoke smell. There are a few things you should throw away after a fire, like canned foods and cosmetics, even if they don’t look like they’re damaged.

Yes, you can limewash surfaces other than brick. Plaster, stone, stucco, and concrete can all also be limewashed. Any porous surface that will absorb the wash is a good candidate for limewash, although it won’t help much with waterproofing. If you choose to limewash over paint, you’ll need to prep before applying it to avoid a powdery, chalky finish. Shiny surfaces like metal or glass can’t absorb limewash, so it’s not suited for these.
