"My results were kind of disappointing. I have a seven year old cedar fence that had never been stained before and it was starting to show its age and was gray and moldy in places. From researching the water-based stains, it looked like a water-based stain would last longer than an oil-based stain, so I picked the Behr fence and deck stain (in chocolate brown). The day before the stain was applied, a guy came by and pressure-cleaned and washed my fence. I got home right after he had left but there was dirt and mud all along the very bottom of the fence (on the 2" x 6" boards), so I had to get my water hose and rinse all of that dirt off, otherwise the paint would not stick to the dirt. The next day he applied the paint (no complaints there) but since then, the paint has been flaking off here and there. If I bump the fence with my rake handle or where squirrels are climbing up the fence or just anywhere you touch the fence, the paint flakes off. I talked to a guy in the Home Depot paint dept. and he said that I really should have lightly sanded the fence before applying the stain because he said the wood fibers stand up over time and if you don’t sand them off first, the paint doesn’t stick as well as it should but he admitted that very few people are going to sand the fence. He also thought that turning up the pressure washer to a higher setting might remove the wood fibers, where the paint would stick better. Anyway, I don't think the pressure cleaning and washing was done correctly. I know that for sure because there was dirt all along the bottom of the fence that should have been rinsed off but wasn't. I don't think the pressure washer was turned up high enough but I have no way of proving that."

"The RFD team was excellent from sales thru execution. Rose and Fahad ensured timely communication and their team executed our plan as designed and with precision. They built our iron deck railings on site to ensure they fit our old 55 yr old house. They are just beautiful. We were so happy with their work, we employed them again and will continue to as we remodel this old house. Highly recommended."

"Back in early June after the big storm we had extensive damage to our landscaping and property. Several trees were down a few had damaged our landscaping and hardscaping. BRYCE and his team at reeds showed up quickly they did an amazing job not only clearing the damage but also giving our landscaping new life. I couldnt say enough good things about them honestly. Took one call and we were impressed it feels like most contractors you have to chase to get the job done but not Reeds we felt great about the decision they were transparent about everything which again is rare with contractors again can't say enough good things we will be using more of them soon on other projects"

"It took 2 tries before I could ever reach anyone....I made an on line request but got no response so I called. Omar and I set up a time for him to come by and give me an estimate. He arrived timely and gave what I thought was a fair estimate so we set up a date for him to start the maintenance; the sod was to come later. After further review, I found that he was a little more expensive than what I am already paying for estimate so I called leaving a message that I wanted only the sod installation and please call about that. I never heard anything. Sent a text asking for a call AND saying if he did not want to do the job, please let me know so I could get someone else. I never heard from him."

"I somewhat pleased, BUT there are squeaking boards on my lower deck & some are cracking down the center of several boards. This was noticed more so after the job was completed. Plus the railing on lower deck is bowing & needs to be supported. Staining was missed in several places on railing & deck. On the upper railing there is a post that needs to be REPLACED due to chunks of wood knocked out or chipped away that were being hidden after staining was done. The front gate has a cracked center board from top to bottom. The gate is now pulled away from post making for NO privacy! I need portello's to come back out to fix these issues as discussed with Portello a week after job was completed."

"Our house was in need of scrapping, caulking, and repainting. John Quinn, the owner of All About Curb Appeal Painting gave us an itemized estimate and a timeframe. What he promised he kept. He used only high quality products. John Quinn is a gifted craftsman. After working with John I would 110% use him again and recommend him as my very first choice for exterior painting. A simple sketch by us of our house, and where the colors go helped us visualize. The work was thoroughly and beautifully done. The prep work and power washing he does on the first day, allowed to dry, and painted. He did our average size home in 3 days. We believe John is one of the best house painters in the whole valley."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

PVC decking can get slippery when wet because it’s made from plastic. However, composite and wood decking can also be slippery when wet. It’s best to wear shoes with grippy soles when walking on a wet deck, no matter the material, and to be extra cautious not to slip and fall down.

Yes. Freestanding or floating decks are exactly what the name implies—structures with their own support beams. You can build a deck yourself and place it next to a house for the illusion of a connected deck without the hassle. Or you can construct it in a separate part of your yard for a dedicated outdoor entertainment space. For the purpose of removing a freestanding deck, the steps are the same as an attached deck, but you don’t have to cut the deck away from the home.

The overhang, or nosing, of deck steps is another area that will be covered in building code requirements. The noses on your deck steps should have a minimum overhang of ¾ inch. For safety, usability, and code compliance, the nosing of deck steps should not extend past 1¼ inches.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

Yes, it is generally safe to have a fire pit on a deck, but you must adhere to building codes and take several safety precautions. For both built-in and freestanding models, you must use a heat-resistant barrier, such as a fire pit pad or heat shield, between the pit and the deck. Additionally, consider the weight of the fire pit and ensure your deck can structurally support it, reinforcing it if necessary. The fire pit must also be positioned a safe distance from your house, particularly from materials like vinyl siding, to prevent heat damage.
