They called back quickly, but quoted a price of about $375 (after Angie's List discount) for the cleaning, and another $350 to replace the cap. Called Downeast for another quote, and they said $275 for the cleaning, and "while we're up there we'll just put the cap back on." (Downeast ended up charging just $175, because they inspected it and said it didn't need cleaning, so just charged for the visit and replacing the cap.)"

The two technicians who performed the work were very professional and worked hard to overcome some unforeseen installation difficulties. From my initial e-mail to the installation of the cap, Chimney Chap was very responsive. Meanwhile, some other companies I contacted were unresponsive and less interested in performing a small installation project. "My experience with Aaron's chimney service was excellent all around. I contacted them in Nov./Dec. - their busiest season, and I still got a call back within 24-48hrs, and they came out within a week to inspect our chimney flues. The price for inspection is $99, which they said would be waived if any of the flues needed cleaning. Only one flue needed cleaning, so I was charged $150 total for all three flue inspections and one flue cleaning. They were very upfront about price, and followed through with what they said. There were no changes or additional fees. The two men that came out were very professional, they were very careful with all our things and they were careful to cover up the carpeting around the fireplace before cleaning. They recommended some work that we need done, and they gave us all the options (the more affordable, 7-10 year solutions, and the more expensive, lifetime guarantee solutions) and followed up within a week with a detailed report of all work done and all issues that might need fixing in the future (some more urgent than others). They were very honest and clear about what they found, and never made us feel pressured about getting the recommended work done through them (but we will). We have had several contractors here this past year to inspect/repair/paint/etc.(we just purchased our home 8 months ago), and by far Aaron's chimney service was the best of the bunch. I would highly recommend them for chimney/roof work, and now with all the snow we are getting this year, they just sent us an email letting us know that they offer snow removal/ice dam removal too. I would definitely have them back out for this or any other type of work involving roof/chimney maintenance."

"Our chimney needed to be rebuilt from the roof up. We called Carl for an estimate and he sent someone out who gave a free verbal estimate of $1300.00. We scheduled the work and were told they would come out to do the project as soon as they could, as there were other projects ahead of us. The work was completed during three consecutive days by the same gentleman who came out the first time to give the verbal estimate. On the third day, when the work was completed, Carl's worker stated he would be collecting a check from us that day. He then asked what we were quoted on the formal estimate from the company. This came as a complete surprise to us as the only estimate we had ever received was the free, verbal estimate when he first visited our home. He then told my husband he was under the impression the total for the work came to $1800.00 and then he called Carl to confirm. Because of the miscommunication, Carl agreed to charge us $1350.00. This was a positive aspect in our dealings with the company, although they could have been more communicative and clear regarding a formal estimate in the first place. After the work was done, we noticed a lot of debris on our roof, including broken bricks and mortar from the old chimney. We also noticed that a large piece of mortar/cement had been left under our back deck as well as had been spread over parts of our foundation. We are assuming this was extra and the worker was trying to dispose of it. We also never received a receipt for the work. We should have asked for one when we gave him the check, but we were going out of town and were in a rush. Therefore, my husband called Carl multiple times the next week. Carl never answered his phone and his voicemail box was full every single time. My husband also sent an e-mail to the address listed on the company's website, detailing our concerns: 1) no receipt, 2) debris on the roof, and 3) a free cleaning of the chimney which had been part of a verbal agreement -- and my husband never heard back. Due to their unresponsiveness and the mess that was left at our home, we have given up on contacting this company and will be using a different company for any further chimney repairs or cleanings in the future."
