"I needed to have my fence redone to be in compliance with the city so my dogs could be outside. I loved how they constantly checked on me and made sure my fur baby wouldn’t be able to dig a whole. I later on changed my mind asked for it to be alittle taller than original and they didn’t hesitate to do it. I wanted the original color of the wood but later on also changed my mind to wanting it painted a darker color. I love how they listen to everything I wanted and tried their best to do it. The staff was friendly and kept checking on me and letting me know the progress. I will definitely hire them for anything else in my house. They did a amazing job and I loved the communication."

"The remodel took a little longer than expected but Joe is very meticulous and took his time with the installation of the new cabinets and we are glad he did, Joe also modified a cabinet drawer that wouldn’t close because of a valve on the stovetop that wasn’t part of the scope of the project and didn’t charge extra for that work. We would use him again."

"It went very well. The guys were very meticulous about their work and made sure if it want to their satisfaction they fixed it. And we were always in lock step about what looked right. Ran a little longer than anticipated, but what remodel of this scale ever does? Super job, craftsman type work!"

"Mauricio and his crew at Mr. Remodeling became family. They were trustworthy, kind, punctual, professional and performed above expectations on all tasks. The final product is breathtaking, and guests and family are stunned by the work. I would not only hire him again, I would ONLY hire him. He does what he says he will do, when he says he will do it. And that is a quality that is hard to find in people in general, much less in this industry. Hire him. You will not regret it."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Although homeowners often use the terms basement remodeling and basement finishing interchangeably, they are quite different terms.

Finishing a basement is the process of taking a basement space that is not habitable and adding elements to make it usable. This includes adding plumbing, flooring, and insulation.

Remodeling a basement means taking an already existing finished basement and changing it, often by adding or removing walls, adding plumbing, or changing the existing flooring.

A walkout basement is considered to be partially below grade because at least one wall is entirely exposed. In some cases and in specific municipalities, inspectors and appraisers will still count walkout basements as below grade, which means the space can’t serve as living space or be rented out. If you intend on using the area as living space or a separate apartment, you should check with your local building department to make sure it’s legal to do so.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

It is generally more affordable to finish a basement than an attic, though it ultimately depends on how you plan to use the space. The average cost to finish a basement ranges from $7 to $23 per square foot, while attic renovation costs $30 to $60 per square foot. However, a simple attic conversion to a storage space will cost significantly less.

Lifting a house and adding a basement is one way to add usable square footage. Lifting or jacking a house is a complex process, and it can be expensive, not to mention that you won’t be able to live in your house while it’s lifted, due to safety concerns. Lifting a house should only be done by experienced professionals.
