"This is the second large project that Carlos and his crew has done for me. The outside of my home needed a lot of repair, updating and refreshing There was a lot of rotten wood around the doors and windows, the chimney, the garage door, the roof facing on the front of the house. They replaced it all, powerwashed, caulked, and painted the exterior of my home. My old back door, a single French door that opens to the back patio and is very exposed to the elements, was rotting out badly underneath the frame and along the sides. They replaced that door with a new French door with updated thermal double-paned glass. They removed 3 unsightly and unnecessary brick columns from my front yard. They removed old fencing and rebuilt beautiful new fences as well as painted them. They did all jobs with care and professionalism. They were always sure to let me know when the unexpected arose, and helped me decide the best way to handle problems. When it became apparent that I needed to call an exterminator out to treat for ants, they were very good about waiting for that to be taken care of before continuing. Any time there was a question on how to proceed they consulted me. The outside of my home and yard were left clean and lovely. I would never expect anything less from these folks, and would never dream of calling anyone else for any job around my home, large or small. I highly recommend The Empire of Tile and Granite."

"We first used Paul for painting our complete home interior ten years ago when we found him on Angie's List. He did such a good job that we subsequently used him for exterior painting, cabinet resurfacing and more interior painting. His company has grown to include more services and we will certainly be using him more often as our needs change and as our home ages. We heartily recommend Paul!"

"We were wanting to enclose an area of our house to make an office. Kevin did an amazing job. He came out and listened to what we were wanting to do. He gave his opinions and advice and drummed up a quote right then and there. Kevin explained the cost of everything and the process. His guys executed everything perfectly. They even cleaned up after themselves and kept the dust enclosed into the area they were working on. We are extremely happy with our new office and look forward to using Nolen Contracting for many other projects."

"The General Contractor estimated that the work would be completed in 3 Months (12 Weeks). Mine actually took 7 Months (28 Weeks) to complete. The majority of the delays were caused by the myriad of subcontractors only showing up an average of 2 days a week when I was informed to expect 4 days of work each week until the job was completed. It seem that subcontractors are indeed, independent. (That is a GROSS UNDERSTATEMENT at the very least!).
The overall quality was excellent. My finally cost was just under 5% and that was caused directly by "Change Orders" due to a design or specification change by the homeowner (me).
Suggestion #1: In dealing with General Contractors, take your time in your designs and go over every tiny detail from the largest ones (such as appliances) to the smallest ones (such as color, function, orientation and location of light switches). Even though I took 6 months and 6 blueprint versions, I still had 20 "Change Orders" during the construction phase which resulted in addition cost to the project. In the end, my cost overage was only 4.7% which is pretty remarkable for a job of this magnitude.
Suggestion #2: Write into any contract a monetary penalty clause to help prevent any extraordinary delays in the work scheduled outlined in any final contract. This will give the subcontractors a massive incentive to live up to the terms of contract. My job was supposed to be finished the third week of July 2013, BUT it didn't wrap up until the last week of November 2013!
Suggestion #3: On the final "walkthrough", write down every little scratch, nick, streak, crack, misalignment that you can see. If possible, make two or three pre-final walk throughs to insure you don't miss the tiniest flaw. Pay special attention to door and cabinetry alignments including the security and tightness of handles and hinges.
I give Trend Builders and overall rating of A. Some of the subcontractors give a B for punctuality due to their only showing up an average of 2 days a week when I was promised 4 days of work at 10 hours a day.  The master electrician and cabinet maker each deserve an A Plus for the very high quality of their work !

Caulking Services questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can use a dremel tool to cut plexiglass. Follow the instructions under “How to Cut Plexiglass with a Saw,” and use a dremel tool with a 561 bit instead of a saw.

You can tackle hanging Christmas lights yourself with the right tools, accessories, and a trusted friend or neighbor. You’ll need to purchase a ladder ($100 to $300), clips ($10 to $20), hooks ($10 to $15), and lights ($25 to $100 per string).

Otherwise, you should hire a trusted holiday light installer near you. You’ll pay an average price of $200 to $650, but you’ll have peace of mind knowing that the job is done correctly and safely.

In most states, handypeople do not need to be licensed to perform simple home repair tasks and smaller jobs. When projects exceed specific cost amounts, however, ranging from $500 in California to $50,000 in other states, some municipalities consider them to be contractors, meaning they need to be licensed. To learn if your handyperson should be licensed to work on your job, contact your local governing body or state contractors’ licensing board before starting any work.

The cost to hire a handyman can vary, with most charging on a per-hour or per-project basis. On average, expect to pay between $50 and $150 per hour, with a typical rate around $90 per hour. For project-based work, the average cost is about $400, though the total can range from as low as $180 to $1,500 or more. Some handypeople may also require a minimum flat rate, such as payment for two hours of work.

Several factors influence the final cost, including:

  • The type, size, difficulty, and complexity of the job

  • The amount of time the work takes

  • The handyman's experience level

  • Your geographic location

  • The cost of materials and any necessary permits

  • Accessibility of the work area and potential travel costs

Additionally, you may encounter higher rates or extra fees for emergency services or work scheduled during holidays.

Handypeople usually don’t hold trade licenses, so they typically aren’t qualified to tackle projects involving installing or making alterations to plumbing or electrical lines. Below are some jobs that a handyperson usually won’t be able to complete:

  • Installing plumbing for a new kitchen or bathroom

  • Replacing plumbing pipes

  • Installing or repairing septic systems

  • Running new electrical wiring

  • Installing a subpanel
