UPDATE---NIGHTMARE #3. So, I tried again today, even though I said I would never use this service, because Angie?s List keeps rating this service #1. Big mistake. It?s urgent . . .clogged sink. I cancel an important business appointment to be here, and put off a visit to an MD. Plumber ?B? is unavailable, so I said ?anyone but plumber ?A? please.? (See prior post, below.) The plumber was to come between 8-10AM, for 4 issues I listed on an email via Angie?s List. (Clogged sink, reroute drainpipe, check source of rust flakes under cabinet, and mount a dish sprayer.) I confirmed by phone, early in the morning before the appointment. The dispatcher said, ?It will be closer to 10, than to 8.? Plumber never came. I call at 10:40 and they say no plumber is coming! Excuse: ?We called you at 7:37 AM to confirm and there was no answer.? We go into an Abbot and Costello routine--- (they did not leave a voice mail message the first time, they called me again later with a message, and remember, I returned the call, and they confirmed the appointment!) So, I ask for the general manager at 10:40, and get another excuse: ?You were assigned plumber ?A? by mistake, so we didn?t send him!? [Then why didn?t I get a phone call? Now I?m starting to get paranoid. I think, ?Are they doing this to me because of my previous Angie?s List post?? ?Why are other people satisfied, and I?m having such bad luck??]
Now it?s 12 noon. NO PLUMBER! NO TELEPHONE CALL! I give up.Why can?t I just make an appointment and a plumber comes on time? [And, will be able to get my Angie?s List ?$25 for $75 credit? back??]
PS: BTW, look at the company?s response on Angie?s list:
?We are currently looking into your concerns so that we can reach an appropriate resolution with you and prevent future issues.?
Nobody addressed my ?concerns,? nor were ?future issues? prevented!
==================
POSTED EARLIER:
Buffalo Roto Rooter is hit or miss. You get either a nightmare or good service. I've given them several chances.
The first plumber was a disaster. He came to my house twice. He argued with me, saying that I either freeze or scald in my shower because ?during the winter, the water is colder and hard to regulate.? He refused to fix it. As it turns out, the O-ring/cartridge is shot, and I now have to pay for another service call. He also said that the reason my electric sump pump rapidly cycled is ?normal.? (It wasn?t. It was because the float was stuck on the float line.) Anyway, on one of those two visits, his sump pump maintenance repairs resulted in basement flooding. What a nightmare! (Especially since the pipe bursting is on a *backup* water-powered sump pump!) The company made it good, admitted it was the plumber?s fault, sent another plumber, and did the re- repairs, waiving some of the charges. (However, they did not waive the charges to replace the rapid-cycling electric sump pump since the link between the bad advice and the damage was not as clear.) I understood, and reserved my Angie?s review since we all make mistakes. I also realize that bad reviews can hurt the livelihood of a business. I am a small business owner myself.
So now, another nightmare, out of Abbot and Costello?s ?who?s on first?? I need simple faucet repairs. I make sure not to get the same plumber again by requesting good plumber. Everything is OK; I schedule a service call via Angies list email. Appointment confirmed with requested plumber. Then I get a voice mail from the ?dispatcher?: ?that plumber is not now available.? I use Angies list email again to straighten it out, and they said ?sorry for the misunderstanding? and the plumber I wanted *is* available, and will still be there from 8-10 Monday.
Now 8-10 Monday comes, and . . .no plumber! No call. I call Roto Rooter, and get an excuse that is supposed to explain everything. (?He?s on a *big excavation.*?) Honestly, someone else?s excavation does not concern me. My *faucets* concern me. I want to be treated just as importantly as other customers. He didn?t show up, nobody called, I took time off work, and I can?t take a shower. They can?t send another plumber until after I must leave the house.

They improperly jumped my car and fried the electrical system – my radio/CD panel didn’t work, notification lights that normally go off after a few seconds stayed on, the car wouldn’t accelerate when I pushed on the gas petal. Of course they didn’t want to stand by their work and pay for the damage repairs, saying something was wrong with my car (my car was only a bit over 4 years old at the time and people don’t buy Toyotas because they fall apart in that short amount of time). Only because I had a 3rd party company hired by my car’s maker was why I was able to get the money for the repairs. I realize this is one of only a few roadside assistance/towing companies in Laramie, so there’s not much choice. They did do a good job the previous times they jumped my car, so it’s not that I think they are completely horrible and should be avoided at all costs. However, I warn you to watch them work from the beginning if they are to give you a jump – make sure they are hooking it up in the right order; if you don’t know at least stand there and ask questions to make them think about what they are doing while they are doing it. Be especially wary if it’s near the end of the day, they are human after all and watching them/asking questions will help you and them avoid headaches of going through the repair claims process. FAQs for electrical service projects in Buffalo, NY
It’s important to ask an electrician a few questions before you commit to hiring them so you can make an informed decision as a consumer. If you’re getting estimates or considering hiring an electrician, ask them these questions:
Are you a full-time electrician?
Are you bonded, licensed, and insured?
What level of experience do you have as an electrician?
Can you please share three references?
Do you do residential or commercial electrical work?
What kinds of electrical work are you most familiar with?
Will any subcontractors be performing the work?
Are permits and inspections required?
Who is responsible for obtaining permits and inspections?
What is your schedule?
Do you offer a guarantee or warranty on your work?
Will you sign a do-not-exceed clause to keep the job within the budget?
Tipping an electrician is not a requirement nor is it expected, as they build a fair wage into the price of the job. It’s up to your discretion. There are no set rules for tipping electricians, but if they did a great job and you’re so inclined to tip 10% to 15%, it will likely be received with thanks.
Yes, you should get a quote or an estimate from an electrician. Most electricians offer free estimates or quotes. When getting quotes, do your research and verify each electrician’s license. Get quotes from three different electricians to compare. If the prices or items listed appear different on the quotes, ask the electrician to clarify. Learning as much as you can about the electrical work you want done will help you get the most accurate estimate.
Qualified, licensed electricians will charge from $50 to $100 per hour. The cost to hire an electrician for emergency visits may range from $100 to $200 per hour because this urgent service usually takes place during off hours and may require an electrician to leave or reschedule jobs they’re currently working on. Scheduling work on holidays or during periods of high customer demand, like after a major storm, will also lead to higher rates or extra fees.
Yes, although there are different types of electricians, they must be licensed, certified, and in most cases insured. States have different requirements for electrician licensing and certifications. In some cases, there may be licensing requirements at the local level, but not the state level. It’s always a good practice to confirm requirements with your local municipality. If licensing is not required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed electrician with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
