JD and his crew were fantastic! The estimate was competitive with other bidders and we felt the value of their services was very high. We had extensive wood rot damage around most of the windows in our house. JD and his crew were very detailed and careful as they removed the old windows, repaired the wood rot, and installed the new windows. The locations that were leaking before the window installation are leaking no more. Wood Rot Solutions also repaired rot on the exterior of our house, including trim and siding. Everything was caulked well and it was easy for the painters once they arrive. (Note: painting was not part of Wood Rot Solutions scope.) JD and his crew were very professional. They kept the interior of the house clean and even worked around our child's naptimes. We are VERY happy with our new windows.

"Ron Scott, owner of White Dog Painting, came out in late September to see what was needed and prepare an estimate to repair siding, wood rot, and paint my home. While walking around the house, he has some smart ideas on how to prepare the fascia and trim to prevent further wood rot. He provided an estimate. It was complete and White Dog was hired to make repairs and paint the home. White Dog showed up in early October to begin. The crew arrived promptly at 9AM and worked until dark for several days. White Dog repaired and replaced trim, chalked and prepared the surfaces for painting. The crew spray painted and it looked great. There were only two issues that came up during the painting. 1. They used two different brands/colors of siding, and the darker siding appeared to have already been painted another color. Ron Scott assured me both were new siding, but still waiting on receipts showing he made 2 separate purchases of new siding rather than using scraps from another job. 2. The really good ideas Ron had on making adjustments to the trim, fascia were never conveyed to the crew and I had to press the crew myself to get those adjustments made on, literally, the last day of their work. As good as the finished paint job and repairs looked; the unskilled approach to the other details soured the experience. The trim was screwed into the window itself rather than the frame. Of the 11 windows painted, 8 were ‘painted shut’ making them inoperable. The storm windows and door were ‘slapped’ back on, leaving large air gaps between the storm doors/windows and frames. Of the 4 outdoor lights the removed (before painting) then reattached; only two worked. The other two had not been wired correctly. Worst, the home has a steel roof and Ron had assured me his crew knew how to operate on a steel roof. They did not. They left 4 trails of dents and damage across the roof as they painted the dormer. Ron assured me that White Dog was committed to making things right. Two months went by and White Dog never came out to inspect the damage or send their insurance agent. Once I got an estimate for the repairs, I told him the amount and the roofing company to make the check out to. No check. When I insisted he turn it over to his insurance, because he advertises on his website and Angie’s List that he is insured, no response. I complained to the BBB and received an email from Ron that he had given all my information to his insurer and they would contact me. After almost 6 months, still no phone call or resolution from White Dog Painting or contact from an insurance company. I had to have the roof repaired on my own."

"I called Jeff to explain what we needed built, and he was able to pick up the materials and come right away to build the needed structure.  He seems to be able to clearly understand what I am asking for, he listens to the info I give him and uses his skill and inventiveness to solve our needs. He customized the size to keep the trash containers from moving around.  He was so accomodating for this small project, and we really appreciate it."

"Both gentlemen were very nice. The work that was performed was completed at a high level and quality. There was some question regarding a 12 x 12 deck kit that I had requested that they start putting together. Unfortunately, I was missing flashing so that the work could not be started. I have to admit that I was unable to be home while the work was being completed and I was barely available by phone. However, according to my daughter, her husband and my son (who were all present)- while the lead handyman had some valid issues with setting up the deck, instead of spending the 4 hours I paid for trying to get something accomplished, he spent most of his time showing them why I needed to return the deck kit, while the other handyman did a majority of the work. Then after 3 hours, when everything else was completed they broke for lunch. When they returned to meet with me  (I was late and they very graciously waited for my return) in order to discuss the deck, I was told that they could buy the items that I was missing and come back another 2 days with a 3rd handyman and build a deck (for an extra $1000). When I declined that offer and inquired why I only received one handyman for 3 hours when I paid for 2 handymen for 4 hours, it was explained to me (by the lead handyman) that my family had been untruthful to me. When I proved to them that 09300 - 1230 is, indeed only 3 hours, they offered to do anything else I needed for an hour. When I requested that they start on the deck, they declined. They offered to do "anything to make this right for me" I requested that they leave. They stated that they didn't want to receive a bad review on Angie's List and would be happy to come back and build the deck (with the added supplies and $1000), I declined. The lead also offered to give my personal phone number to another gentleman who could give me a bid on building my deck. I declined. I was very disappointed with the service I purchased.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

When sourced responsibly, the most sustainable wood decking options are timber trees like redwood, pine, Douglas fir, Nootka cypress, and Western red cedar. These tree species are fast-growing with low carbon emissions. Plus, most timber woods make durable deck materials because of their resistance to rot and decay over time.

Increases livable area and enhances aesthetic, often boosting property appeal.

Unless you’re using a 2-in-1 formula or painting over an existing coat of paint, it pays to apply a coat of primer ahead of your new paint. Decks see a lot of footfall and exposure to extreme and sudden temperature changes and moisture levels. The primer promotes better paint adhesion, moisture repellency, and a smoother finish, which means you’ll often need fewer coats of paint.

PVC decking tends to be cooler than composite because the material is less dense and absorbs less heat. However, it depends on the deck’s color. A dark-colored PVC deck may run hotter than a light-colored composite deck. If you’re concerned about your deck getting too hot, it’s best to stick to a light color such as beige or gray.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.
