Also, they had great suggestions as to color selection and different styles I hadn't even thought of. You won't go wrong hiring Exterior Maintenance KC. (P.S. "The guys were very nice to work with and knowledgeable. They power washed our deck and replaced some bad boards. They also recommend we replace the lattice with vinyl instead of wood which looks really good! After the wood weathered for a couple of months, they came back to stain it. They only sent one man to do the job which took all day and he missed a few spots that we had to go over and re-stain ourself. Otherwise, they did a good job!"

Small jobs welcome

"Moses came to my house to give me a quote for a leaking shower, and he ended up quoting me for two other projects I needed taken care of - flashing that needed to be replaced and patching a large hole in the ceiling. He and his helper arrived right on time the following morning and had all 3 projects completed by lunchtime. He communicated with me on everything he was doing, was very nice- and very quiet. I hardly knew he and his helper were here. I'm very pleased with his work, and the fee was less than I expected. I will definitely hire him again."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

A sunroom will add more value to your home than a deck, but with a much higher up-front cost. Depending on its construction and function, a sunroom may be counted as additional living space, while a deck is strictly an outdoor feature. Both will increase your home’s value, but the sunroom will have a much bigger effect.

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.

Cold temperatures can make your deck boards contract. If they don’t contract evenly, they can put pressure on the deck screws and cause them to pop out, making a noticeable sound. Winterizing your deck can help prevent this from happening.

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.

Building a deck without a permit could lead to fines for both the homeowner and the contractor. The exact penalties will depend on your state and municipal building laws. You might also be required to remove the deck and apply for a permit before you can build another. While it might be tempting to skip the permit to save a few bucks, it’ll cost you much more if you’re caught.
