"Louie contacted me within a few hours of my request. He quoted the job on Saturday and was on the job on Tuesday. The demolition of my very dangerously damaged garage went well, and even though we experienced thunderstorms and tornadoes during the demo, Louie finished the job the next morning. His pricing ,expertise and attitude are quite commendable. He will be my only call for any excavation or heavy contractor work."

"We thought we had a sinkhole but Corbin determined it was a huge, old septic tank! In one day it was fixed. He communicated well and tried hard to repair grass spots that equipment dug into as well as smoothing out the fill dirt. We wouldn’t hesitate to hire again."

"I cannot begin to say enough amazing things about Harmon Specialties Not only did they the day of bring helping hands and a sump pump to save our basement, but they came back with their specialty equipment and re-carved and re-shaped all of our terraces and ditches that have been washed out and filled in over the course of time. Incredible work. #highlyrecommended Do not be shy! Give em a call for anything!!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

It takes one hour to dig a 10-foot trench by hand. Use a trenching shovel with a sharp tip and a long head. Plan for more time if your soil is heavy or rocky. Consider renting a trencher if you’re digging a long or deep trench or if you have challenging soil or terrain.

Almost any kind of home can have a wine cellar or cabinet installed. You’ll need an area where a concrete floor can be put in, along with the necessary insulation, climate control, and ventilation systems. If you think of yourself as an aspiring sommelier, an underground wine cellar may be ideal, but it will cost significantly more.

What you choose to install really depends on your budget and how many bottles you’re looking to store.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

In most areas, you will need a permit for excavation work, even for projects that only involve grading or yard leveling. Permit requirements depend on your local government and the scope of the project, but they are especially common for significant digging or work that could affect utilities or public property. These permits help protect the local topography and prevent drainage issues. An experienced excavation company will typically know whether permits are needed and can often handle the process of pulling and closing them for you. You can also verify permit requirements by contacting your local building department and describing your project.

To drill a shallow well, you may be able to use a drive well point. This is a tapered point that is driven into the ground. A drill bit at the end of PVC pipe may be another option to consider. A lot of the cost depends on what tools are available near you.
