"I hired Luke to build us a new deck from the ground up Luke went above and beyond the deck turned out beautiful. He had great ideas for improving my vision. Luke was punctual, hard-working and courteous. The whole project from start to finish went very smoothly. I couldn’t have asked for a better build or builder thanks again, Luke."

"We had originally hired another company to fix a clog in the main line. They ended up hammering the opening to our main sewer line so much that they broke it and blamed it on old pipes. It was warped from them hammering, it did not break on its own. This company came in and not only fixed the broken opening, but also did it for around 1/4th of the cost that the other company had quoted for their mistake."

"He was late about 30 minutes for the first appt. but did e:mail me after 11 minutes. I met with Chris Thomas once and thought he was adequate. his bid was more than Kagay so he reduced by $ 200 which was still higher. He did not show on the Wed. that we had an appt. After I e:mailed about this missed appt., I got busy watching a grandchild and did not access the internet until 3 days later where he had asked about meeting the day before. I e:mailed him about setting another appt. but never heard back since 8 days ago. Earlier, he had asked for 1/2 of the total up front and when I said "no"; he seemed miffed but said that he would forego his normal 50% up front but would pick up the paint, and I was to pay for the paint when he showed with a contract to be signed. I agreed."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best base materials for a ground-level or floating deck are typically gravel and crushed stone (also known as landscaping rocks). These options are inexpensive, provide excellent drainage, prevent weeds, and help minimize moisture buildup, which reduces shifting and rotting. For added stability and to evenly distribute the weight, you can use concrete deck blocks or pavers. While more expensive, concrete blocks and pavers offer a sturdier base than gravel or crushed stone alone.

When building a deck, #2 grade lumber is a go-to for several reasons. It’s strong, budget-friendly, and works well for most framing and decking needs. But upgrading to #1 or Appearance Grade can give your deck that extra visual edge if you're after a cleaner, more polished look for high-visibility spots.

For a 12x20-foot (240-square-foot) deck, you can expect to pay between $7,200 and $14,400. This cost is based on a general price of $30 to $60 per square foot. The final price will depend on factors such as the decking material, design complexity, deck type, location, and local labor costs. Keep in mind that add-ons will increase the total; for example, adding an under-deck drainage system to a deck of this size could cost an additional $7,700.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.

There are more pros than cons when staining a deck. Deck stain is more affordable than paint, it protects the wood and allows the natural textures to shine through, and it can revive the appearance of your home. However, deck stain also requires prep work (sometimes days or more), carries more upkeep than a painted deck, and can fade over time if not cared for.
