"Steve and his team did an excellent job on our project, which included adding insulation to our attic spaces, sealing the attic and basement, removing old insulation in the basement, and treating the basement for mold. Steve helped us feel comfortable and confident about the work that needed to be done to the house. Joe and Rick did excellent work on the project, which was completed quickly. Would work with again!"

"They are professional and thorough, but there is really no wiggle room if you would like something differently done. Choices in booklet are pretty basic, not a lot of options (for flooring types, door style, trim) This company is like the Anderson Windows of basements. (No doubt they spend a lot on advertising; There is a reason they are the top result when searching!) Expect to pay quite a bit more than you planned, but I knew if I chose them it would be done and warrantied for everything. Sometimes you just want to sign and not worry, and I would definitely pick Finished basements plus if you are in that situation and have the budget."

"I hired Rangel's to cover and waterproof a small crawlspace in my basement. They were prompt, courteous, and very professional. The work performed was absolutely beautiful, and a major improvement. I highly recommend Rangel's for any basement waterproofing and repair, and look forward to doing business with them again."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Masonry in Jackson faces unique challenges from freeze-thaw cycles and heavy precipitation. Annual maintenance should include inspecting mortar joints for cracks, applying a water-repellent masonry sealer every few years, and clearing gutters to prevent water intrusion. In spring, check for brick spalling or chimney damage from winter storms, and in fall, remove efflorescence and debris to protect against moisture and foundation settling.

Helpful?

In Jackson, most masonry work is scheduled from late spring through early fall, typically May to September, when temperatures stay above 40°F. This timing is crucial because mortar and concrete need steady warmth to cure properly. Harsh Lake-effect snow and frequent freeze-thaw cycles in winter can damage new brickwork and make sites inaccessible, so major projects are rarely started during colder months unless urgent repairs are needed.

Helpful?

In Jackson, be cautious of masonry contractors who offer unusually low bids, request cash-only payments, or provide unclear project timelines. Reliable pros will discuss using freeze-resistant mortar and moisture barriers due to local weather. Avoid contractors who skip permit discussions or pressure you to sign quickly. Watch for door-to-door offers after storms, and expect clear communication and detailed brick repair or chimney maintenance plans.

Helpful?

Combining masonry projects with related upgrades—such as pairing brick repair with basement waterproofing or scheduling chimney maintenance alongside roof work—can be highly efficient in Jackson. Coordinating projects during the warm season helps maximize contractor availability, streamlines permits, and reduces material delivery times. Bundling services also minimizes disruption and ensures your home is better protected against the region’s challenging weather conditions.

Helpful?

For minor cracks under 1/4 inch, Jackson homeowners can use flexible masonry caulk to prevent water intrusion. Cleaning efflorescence with a gentle acid solution and using low-pressure water for routine brick cleaning are safe DIY steps. Always check for lead paint in older properties and contact local utility marking services before digging. For larger cracks, leaning walls, or chimney repairs, consult a local masonry specialist.
