"Winter was comeing in fast and they were here evryday. They worked hard trying to finish before snow. They worked long hours and did a wonderful job finishing the driveway to the specs we requested..They were extremely professional .We were so happy with their work.We hired them to come back in spring and lay a sidewalk and a slab in our back yard. They did what others said couldn't be done due to dropping temperatures. We recommend them for all your concrete work."

"Abled Vets Construction made then entire process simple and stress-free. They were here when they told us they would be. They were finished before the deadline given and the entire area was cleaner than when they started. The work was top-notch. The company is respectful and understanding of individual needs and wishes in regards to their homes. I was highly impressed with the entire process! "First of all, Thomas and his crew are the hardest working guys I have ever seen, each worker knew what had to be done and did it, there eye for detail was amazing, they went way beyond what was needed to make sure my patio was going to be perfect and it is, I very pleased with everything and their bid was lower than all others by 600.00 to 800.00, they even cleaned up in the street where their trucks had been parked, yes I would hire Larkins Brothers for any project I needed done in a second, no need to have a bunch of contractors that might show up and might not show, anything I need will only take one call, Larkins Brothers."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

To maintain the integrity of your landscape, a retaining wall must be installed if the slope of the angle exceeds 35 degrees. The lean of the wall must be 1 inch per 12 inches in height to disperse the weight of the soil uniformly and guarantee the correct drainage of the soil.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Even if you think you know how to build a retaining wall theoretically, doing the actual work is a completely different story. There are lots of nuances in building retaining walls, and the slightest oversight can compromise their integrity. Therefore, we recommend you hire a pro to build, repair, or replace retaining walls.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.
