"Replaced capacitor. Still didn't work, so we were looking at ac replacement. Before we did, technician continued to experiment by cooling of the compressor with the garden hose and it worked! Saved me thousands in replacement costs."

"I have had this company service my furnace and air conditioner for years. They are a small, family owned and operated business, local to me. All things I like when looking to hire. Jim and his people have always been honest, professional, reasonable, prompt, careful, friendly and I trust them completely. Before Vent, I tried a few other companies. They seemed to always find something that needed more attention, and more money. By contrast, I have an air conditioner that is quite noisy. At least 5 years ago, I was told, by Vent, that it probably wouldn't last much longer. But since it still seemed to cool OK, they just cleaned it. It is still going. Now, they could have told me it had to go. But their honesty bought me another 5 years or so without that major expense. That would never have happened with any other company. In the end, what gives them a 5 star rating is their integrity. I can't ask for more than that."

"I have purchased a yearly heating and cooling maintenance plan from this company for a few years now. The technician that came out today for my air conditioner was on time, pleasant and obviously knew what he was doing. I purchased another plan today."

"Francisco of United Heating and Air Conditioning is the greatest, and I will hire him again happily and hope to have him service my system yearly going forward. He came today as promised and found that my thermostat only needed batteries, but my system was otherwise fine. He is very good and extremely honest and informative."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

While 72 degrees is a comfortable setting for many people, it’s likely not the most efficient temperature setting for your air conditioning unit. By pushing the temperature up to 75 or 78 degrees, you stand to save money on your energy bill. That said, these temperatures may be too warm to be comfortable for some people and are definitely too warm for most people to sleep comfortably.

The higher the BTU rating an air conditioner has, the more effective it can be at cooling your space. It will cool off your room faster in the short term. However, over the long term, if the unit has too many BTUs for the space, it can wear down the unit faster and shorten its life span.

While your AC unit may still run even if its capacitor is going bad, doing so takes a lot more energy, so it can drive up your electric bill and cause further damage to your AC unit’s parts. If you suspect a bad capacitor, it’s important to have a professional diagnose and fix the problem before you continue to run your AC.

When a compressor gets overheated in central air systems or heat pumps, it can still cool your home for a while until it eventually gives out. If the compressor is chronically overheated and no one addresses the root cause, it will create an incredibly expensive problem when your entire HVAC system breaks down and stops working altogether.

It depends on the type of AC unit and the extent of the mold growth. For example, if you have a small amount of mold in your central air conditioner, it’s worth cleaning it to protect your HVAC system and your health. In situations like these, you can often remove the mold yourself in a couple of hours. On the other hand, if you have a portable AC unit with a severe mold problem, it makes more sense to buy a new one. On average, replacing a portable AC unit costs $100 to $500.
