"I hired Juan Reyes and his crew do some cleanup in my landscaping as well as replacing a wooden planter, in July - August 2017. They did a terrific job and were thoughtful, professional, hard-working, and careful of details. I appreciated Juan discussing various options with me, such as removing a tree with/without stump removal, and different types of materials that can be used to build a planter. One of the things they did was clear off vines that had climbed up and around the telephone cables above my backyard - which another tree service (Kerry’s) had REFUSED to do! Unlike Kerry’s Tree Service, Juan Reyes and his crew were very careful not to scrape or knock anything over while carrying branches out to their truck. I would definitely hire them again. (Pictures attached; before & after trimming vines from cables.)"

"I had a large branch from a tree in my yard resting on my Garage roof. Roper Tree Surgeon and Landscaping arrived at our scheduled time and the crew went right to work. They cut the tree off the roof as well as cut the tree down to the ground so the whole tree is gone. They cleaned my backyard and the roof of all the branches they cut. All the employees were extremely polite and respectful of my property. They did an excellent job. I will definetly use their services again in the future ."

"I had a landscaping design/build company until illness kept me from continuing. I felt like I was in good and knowledgeable hands when Rock came out for the estimate - he is an arborist so he understood exactly what I wanted. His crew showed up on time and were very professional with a very capable foreman who interpreted Rock's job description accurately, so the job was done perfectly and the place was clean afterwards."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Unless there’s some sort of rule in your community’s homeowners’ association that requires you to remove a stump, there’s no law that says you have to take it out. If you’re not wedded to the idea of removing it, there are plenty of ways to get creative with this tree remnant. Using the stump as the medium for a wood carving or turning it into a planter are just two examples of ways to repurpose a tree stump.

Yes, you should trim the lower branches of your maple tree for safety. Trimming maple trees as they grow helps lift the crown and canopy and trains it to grow straight up. A good rule of thumb is to prune enough branches to leave 6 feet of clearance under the tree.

If the roots are still alive, the dead tree will usually try to put out new shoots. That doesn’t mean the tree will survive or that the dead parts of a tree will come back to life. If parts of the tree have died and turned gray or rotten, nothing will bring them back to life and they need to be safely removed.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

You should plant trees at least 15 to 20 feet away from your house, and more if the tree will grow large and spread its limbs. Trees pose several dangers to houses when planted too close. They can litter the roof with leaves and branches, create fire hazards, make a ladder for larger pests, and even damage the foundation as their roots grow.
