"Reyes Tree Services did a great job for us. They arrived on time, got the job done quickly (a team of 3 hard workers), and cleaned up the area so it was even better than when they arrived. I heartily recommend Juan Reyes and his teams!"

"Mike and his crew are true professionals. I would hire again without any hesitation. They removed 50' of tall hedges and 5 evergreen trees. They completed the removal and cleanup in under 2.5 hours. They were very careful not to damage other vegetation or personal property of our house and our neighbors. And dug out 2 trees by hand because they wanted to make sure that no electrical or water lines were damaged. I wish all the pros we hire were as skilled and professional as this crew."

"We hired Hye Turf Designs to xeriscape our front and back yards. I’ll be honest with you. Prior to this, we didn’t even have so much as an irrigation system and our yard was a mess. Other than wanting something low maintenance and drought resistant, we had no idea what we were looking for. Hutch Khandjian, Designer and Project Manager, took us under his wing and designed an eye catching landscape using a combination of DG, rock, astroturf and plants. To say we are pleased with the result would be an understatement. Our beautiful yard was created by a team of people who made the whole experience a pleasure. Congenial and communicative, we felt comfortable with them from the start. They completed the project in a timely manner. Daily our property was left clean and tidy. They never left without leaving our house looking better then when they arrived. George the job foreman is a true professional. We highly recommend Hye Turf Designs for your xeriscaping needs."

"We hired Arsen to do cabinetry work in one of our Projects and he did an excellent job! He’s thorough and detail-oriented. His pricing is fair. He finished the job at the agreed set time. He’s also friendly and communicative. We’ll definitely use his services again. Highly recommended."

"Having owned two homes in Los Angeles for over 20 years, I have hired five different tree service companies (all licensed, insured, and highly rated). None of these comes close to the outstanding work, value, and professionalism of Rancho Tree Care. For this current job (removal of a giant Aleppo pine and heavy cutting back of six other large trees), I got three estimates from three of the most highly rated companies listed on HomeAdvisor. I was most impressed with the knowledge, candor, and courtesy of the Racho representative, Felix. The company is family owned and operated, and I felt a genuine personal commitment from Felix for my project and my satisfaction. As a licensed arborist, Felix showed expert insight on the trees and the proposed projects; furthermore, he spoke candidly about pricing options. He never pushed but demonstrated concern and integrity throughout our conversation. In preparation for the job, there were some logistical challenges with the DWP as they needed to drop electrical wires for the tree removal. During this back-and-forth scheduling hassle, Felix responded promptly to all my emails and was flexible about rescheduling. On the day of the work, Felix’s crew arrived promptly at 7:30 AM; they were a well-coordinated, well-honed, and efficient JUGGERNAUT. I have never seen a more determined, focused, and indefatigable tree crew in my life. Felix supervised throughout the day and exceeded my expectations by a big margin. For the reasonable price he was charging, his thoroughness in cutting back those huge trees was totally unexpected. He was 100% true to his word about what he intended to accomplish—and then some. He threw in some extra detail work on a few trees that were not part of our deal; I believe he did this because he is a true arborist and wants all trees to be in optimal condition. Also, he is a generous person and a perfectionist (I believe), honors his family’s business reputation, and has a stellar work ethic. At the end of a very long, arduous day of work, the crew went over the yard with great care to ensure that all debris was removed--very impressive again. After working with five tree companies in 20 years, I will hire only Rancho as long as I have trees to trim. Very rare these days that a company can earn such unequivocal and well-deserved praise. Thank you very much Felix and crew!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you should not use a pruning seal on trees after trimming. Applying a sealant can interfere with the tree's natural healing process, and it does not guarantee protection from pathogens. Instead of sealing the cut, the best practice is to support the tree's natural recovery by providing it with plenty of water and a dormant-style fertilizer. However, there are exceptions. Pruning seals may be recommended for very vulnerable species, like elm trees, in areas where dangerous diseases such as Dutch elm disease are prevalent. In these specific situations, the protection offered by a sealant can outweigh its downsides. For advice tailored to your situation, especially after cutting large branches, it is best to consult a local tree trimming professional.

Getting a tree pro with the right experience can be the difference between your transplanted tree surviving or not. When hiring a local tree transplanting and removal service, follow up on references, check their portfolio, ask for a breakdown of the costs, and get proof of liability and workers’ compensation insurance.

Also, look for companies certified by the International Society of Arboriculture or registered with the Tree Care Industry Association and make sure they have an appropriate state or city license.

No, homeowners insurance typically does not cover the cost of removing a dead, sick, or rotting tree that is still standing. Insurance is designed to protect against sudden and unexpected accidents, whereas a tree dying or rotting over time is considered a maintenance issue. Coverage usually only applies after a tree has fallen and caused damage to your property.

You should avoid cutting off the top of mature cherry trees. This process is called tree topping, and it’s not recommended for cherry trees—or any trees, for that matter. Tree topping removes between one-third to half of the length of the tree trunk, resulting in structurally unsound, fruitless suckers. The only exception is for saplings. Young pie, sour, and tart cherry trees that are over 30 inches tall in the fall or winter before the tree blooms can benefit from heading cuts.

Yes, it is essential to confirm that any tree service company you hire is properly insured before they begin work. Tree removal, trimming, and pruning are dangerous jobs, and proper insurance protects you, your home, and the company from liability in case of accidents or damage. Look for a company that carries both general liability and workers’ compensation insurance, and do not hire one that cannot provide proof of coverage. When browsing for professionals, you can look for indicators like an “Angi Approved” badge, which signifies that the business meets standards like holding applicable licenses and passing a background check. Keep in mind that a license is a legal requirement to operate, while certifications are typically voluntary.
