"My home had a 16 year old furnace and air conditioner which both were not working probably and my electric bill was sky high trying to cool the upstairs of my home. I had Climatemakers come and check out my unit as well as give me a price on a new system and installation. The price of a new 16 seer was the best out of the hundreds of HVAC companies in the Hampton roads area and I couldn’t be happier with the installation crew they were very Quiet and respectful do to the wife working from home. They even matched the thermostat backing with the wall color. The wife was Very happy with that, I was very happy with my electric bill dropping over half of what I was paying the summer before. ps. Thanks for the prompt service during the Covid outbreak."

"We met Tim the owner at the Homeowner show at the Convention Center. Surprised at how personable he was. Cynthia, who handles customer service was very amiable and eager to help. Ryan, the service representative came out and gave us an estimate of a new HVAC system, since ours had died at the colder time this year.we accepted the bid and Ryan came out started the prep work. System was installed in one day. Ryan came out the next day to check everything. We concluded our business and we have wonderful heat. I cannot sing their praises enough. I would recommend them to anyone."

"Mr. Shook is awesome. He arrived as scheduled and gave me a quote which he explained in detail. He was courteous and very knowledgeable. His technicians were punctual and very proficient in installing the units. I have the units on a maintenance program and their office staff is very polite and call to set up appointments twice a year, spring and fall. When I have a question or an issue, their staff is very helpful and if a technician is required, they schedule in a very timely manner. I would highly recommend Absolute Comfort Heating & Cooling."

"I have had Lighthouse Mechanical do some work in the past and their fee seemed to be reasonable. They were helpful, polite and did good work. However, I am now questioning their fee and service. I called them on a Saturday because my system was not working. The tech was able to come out for a $99.00 diagnostic fee which I thought was reasonable for a weekend and with cold weather starting the next evening needed to get the system fixed. The tech was at my place for a minimum of 3 hours and could not locate the issue. The tech was very nice and tried hard. He even called another technician on the phone for assistance. He said he would need to come back the next day with another tech to figure out the issue. The next morning, Sunday, they both came and after more than an hour determined it was the defrost board on the heat pump. As parts places were closed they would need to come back on Monday to install a new board. They were able to do a bypass and get the heat pump to run in the meantime. The tech said the board would run $200 to $300 tops to install price. The office calls me Monday morning and it will be $408 plus the $99 diagnostic fee, Its extremely cold outside so can't really argue and price it out elsewhere. So that Monday after the call about the price another tech shows up with the board and completes the install successfully. Again nice tech even when he had to be outside working in the cold. I receive my invoice and later that day I take a moment to check the part number of the board against the internet to check pricing... $115 was the highest price I could fine. Called the person from the office to see why I was charged $408 plus the $99 diagnostic fee as this didn't add up. I understand mark-up but that's a big mark up on a $115 part and less than an hour’s labor to install it. The person that gave me the price was out and would call me back. No call back that day so I called again the next day and she answered. Her response to me is that they charge a flat fee not based on the part cost or actual installation fee but a national average. And also as they are a Trane dealer and I have a Carrier unit it is more expensive. Customers need to be aware of this. Won't be calling them again. Nice techs but 5 hours plus over two days to figure out the issue and their pricing scheme is not fair. I will check elsewhere next time."

"Judy Sweetland educated us on all of our options when we suddenly had to replace a leaking gas hot water heater. She priced and explained the pricing and installation requirements on different options-tankless, high efficiency and standard models. Judy also checked to see if there were any current rebates available. All of this research and install was done within a day. We appreciated the fast service since we were without hot water, and we felt confident in our decision. The technicians wore masks and disinfected everything that they touched, due to Coronavirus, They were professional and knowledgeable. We are likely to use them for other projects. Judy also honored a $350 online coupon. Thank you, Sweetland's, for a job well done!"

"I have been planning to replace my HVAC system for a while. It was 19+ years old and I had spent close to $1000 over the past few years applying "bandaid" fixes to keep it operational. Smiley's HVAC had done work for both my brother and my Parents and they were both pleased. I had called Smiley's and 2 other HVAC companies to come give me replacement estimates about 18 months ago. They ranged in price from $6000 to $15000. I finally decided to bite the bullet and get the work done. While Smiley's was not the cheapest estimate, based on the reviews here and on Angies List, and my families experiences, I decided to go with Smiley's. I called on Tuesday 12/18/2018 and was Helped by a very cordial young lady on the phone. She told me Larry wasn't in the office but he would call me back as soon as he picked up his messages. Twenty minutes later Larry called and we set up an appointment for him to come back and give me a new estimate on a replacement system on Wed 12/19. This estimate was very slightly higher than the one from 18 months prior but I expected that. Larry showed up promptly and did a thorough evaluation of my existing system. He was extremely knowledgable and helpful in his explanations. Part of my HVAC system is in my attic and I asked about moving it down into the garage. Larry said that could be done but probably wasn't a good idea. I expressed concern over condensation leaks I've had in the past and he understood. He was very thourough and patient in explaining the mitigations he would put in place to prevent any future leaks and also explained why moving the components into the garage on a house sitting on a slab foundation would make any potential condensation drainage musch more difficult. It all made perfect sense. Larry got back to me with an estimate that afternoon and gave me a followup call to see if I had any questions. I didn't and asked when we could get started with the work. As this is the week before Christmas, I was expecting sometime next week. I was pleasantly surprised when he said they could do it the next day! He called to make sure all of the necessary materials were in stock and called me back to confirm and 8:30 AM arrival time for his crew. The Crew (TJ, Jeremy, Nick and Dave) showed up promptly and got to work as soon as I cleared them a path through my garage to the Attic access ladder. They worked through the day and by 4:30 PM I had a new HVAC system to include a new additional return air vent. I am extremely pleased with my entire Experience with Smiley's. If you are looking to have a professional team replace your HVAC system at a reasonable price, call Larry!"

"Work was good. Workers were efficient if not particularly personable. Read the fine print on any offers. Returns, extra exhaust ducts, and disinfectant will cost extra. I was aware of that before they started but it could be an unpleasant surprise to others."

"Dana and his team did a great job preparing our house for move in. The team thoroughly cleaned the dryer duct line that had not been properly cleaned for several years; they cleaned out a high fire risk. They also installed two high quality vent guards to prevent birds and other critters from accessing the dryer duct and first floor bathroom exhaust duct. The team also cleaned the HVAC ducts on our house. They identified some mold in a few of the lines and replaced one of the worst lines. They also pointed out a couple of issues with the HVAC transitions that had tears in the flex line that exposed insulation and some mold on the interior insulation in a metal transition duct for the upstairs HVAC system; both were recommended for replacement or repair by a certified HVAC mechanic. Upon completion, they back-fogged each duct, replaced all vents (28 in total), filled gaps between the metal vent and ceilings on the second floor (should have been done when the house was constructed in 2003), and sanitized both HVAC zones. The mold, issues with the transitions and gaps between the metal vent openings and ceiling holes were not note by the home inspector prior to closing, and were not disclosed by the previous homeowner. Total cost for all the work was around $3300. While the price might seem high, the quality and thoroughness of the work completed, the professionalism and efficiency of the crew, and the large volume of work (cleaned 28 vent lines plus the the main trunk for each of two zones) was very reasonable for the time required and the labor quality. In our prior home, I used another local company who advertises through ValuePak to clean the ducts. Following their service I had issues with collapsed HVAC duct lines afterward that caused icing on the AC unit. Initially, the other company was significantly cheaper, but their work was shoddy, their technician was not as careful and diligent, and ended up costing about the same on a smaller house due to the problems caused by the cleaning. I highly recommend Dana and Airight. I will definitely be calling on them again for dryer vent line and duct cleaning in the future."

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

Depending on the size of your home and system, as well as any upgrades or add-ons you choose, it may take between three and five days to completely replace an existing HVAC system from start to finish. Your contractor should be able to give you an estimate before they begin the actual replacement.

Yes. Boilers need water to run without overheating, also known as dry firing. If you run it without a sufficient volume of water, either because of a burst pipe or a leak, you run the risk of damaging your machine or jeopardizing the safety of your home as a whole. When in doubt, shut off your boiler and repair any plumbing issues before turning it back on. Alternatively, consider installing a low-water cutoff (LWCO) before any issues arise. This gadget will protect your boiler by monitoring water levels and automatically shutting it off if it gets too low.

If you hear your radiator clanking even when it’s turned off, it’s typically because there’s trapped water or air in the system, causing a pressure buildup. When you hear significant clanking, popping, crackling, or banging in a radiator that’s turned off, you’ll want to bleed the pipes or call in an HVAC specialist to deal with the problem (and prevent it from happening in the future).

You can save money on heating oil through a combination of improving home efficiency and smart purchasing strategies.

Home Efficiency and Usage:

  • Improve Insulation: Ensure your home, especially the basement and attic, is well-insulated and sealed against drafts to prevent heat leakage.

  • Manage Your Thermostat: Use a properly calibrated and programmable thermostat. Lower the temperature by a few degrees, particularly when you are away from home or asleep.

Purchasing Strategies:

  • Buy in the Off-Season: Order heating oil during the summer months when prices are generally at their lowest. This strategy is most effective if you have a large primary tank or a separate storage tank to accommodate bulk deliveries.

  • Consider a Delivery Contract: Some companies offer contracts with a set price for the term. This can lead to savings if market prices for oil increase, but you might pay more if prices drop.

Most home boilers will need an expansion tank. That’s because these boilers are closed-loop systems, where the water is trapped. An expansion tank is needed when the boiler heats the water and it expands, allowing air to condense in the tank to make room for the water. Other types of boilers don’t use an expansion tank, such as traditional steam boilers, but these aren’t as common. And hot water tanks may be able to use a pressure release valve instead. When in doubt, call in a pro to take a look.
