"Hardline did an amazing job with our garage floor fix, trench drain, and apron. They went above and beyond to correct the issues from when the original garage floor was poured and failed. I also really enjoyed getting to know the team working on the project, they were very personable and took pride in what they do. The owners, Brenda and Jon, are just great down-to-earth people. I would absolutely recommend Hardline Concrete & Masonry to others!"

"Twin Cities Drywall transformed our home! The popcorn finish was removed and replaced with a smooth finish across multiple rooms in our home (the entire first floor, including 2 bedrooms, rooms with beams and vaulted ceilings). The smooth texture is truly perfectly smooth- no creases, bumps, lines, or any visible flaws whatsoever. It has been about 6 months since the work was done and we remain very pleased with the ceilings. We are having them back soon to provide the same services to 3 other rooms in our home. They provide a high quality end result, and they are very reasonable, professional, and easy to work with. I am truly happy to give Mark and the team my business!"

"Greg's crew did an excellent job and they were prompt and cleaned up everthing. Greg's company did a retaining wall on our property a few years ago and did an excellent job also. That's why we called him. We won't hesitate to call him again for any other work."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.

Proper design and construction prevent erosion and add structural stability to landscapes.

Even if you think you know how to build a retaining wall theoretically, doing the actual work is a completely different story. There are lots of nuances in building retaining walls, and the slightest oversight can compromise their integrity. Therefore, we recommend you hire a pro to build, repair, or replace retaining walls.

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.
