"Rigo and his IBC team were very collaborative in regrading a section of our asphalt driveway to enable our cars to enter/exit the garage without bottoming out. We successfully regraded the driveway. We ran into a minor glitch with rain when sealing the driveway, but Rigo diligently came out, corrected the problem, and resealed the driveway. I appreciated Rigo's reliability, diligence, and honesty."

Customers say: True professional

"We have a slight hill at the end of our gravel driveway, which washed out pretty badly during the recent hurricane rains. I was looking for someone to repair this, and get us another year out of the gravel driveway before we have it paved. I called three different companies, and Bill Cooper was the one who gave me the best explanation of what needed to be done. He wasn't trying to push me towards an expensive new driveway, but rather gave me options to do it right. In the end, we covered the loose gravel with a milling base, which looks better and sets me up to pave the driveway in a year or so, when it has appropriately settled. I think Bill really knows his stuff, and I'm very happy with the way things turned out."

"Unexpected rain unfortunately ruined the initial pour of the new driveway, but before I even realized that this happened XtraCare was tearing up the first pour, and re-poured the new driveway which came out perfect. The retaining wall also had some unexpected complications for getting a good level 1st row of retaining wall blocks, but the guys at XtraCare worked hard at tearing out the old wall & concrete footing to ensure a solid new wall went up well and wouldn't lean over time. It's been almost 2 months since the work has been performed, and we've since had a couple heavy rains which allowed me to watch the runoff run away from the house, which was the intention! Thanks XtraCare!"

"E Stanley paving did a great job. Their representative Joe was friendly and professional and able to answer all our questions. They started the job within a few days of the initial visit. It entailed a lot more work than I thought. They had to bust up three sections of the driveway in order to make it level and get a proper base and had to raise a drain in the driveway. Due to many issues with the county grinder in our front yard that the county has had to excavate our driveway had sunk down 3 inches. They created a smooth surface level to the sidewalk and did a nice job on the edges. We couldn't be more thrilled."

"Very thorough preparation--removal of prior driveway, substantial excavation to permit required base of crushed stone and sand, concrete footings around perimeter of driveway to stabilize edges of paver driveway. Very nice work setting pavers, setting trim pavers on edges, trimming pavers to fit where driveway wasn't square, and applying polymeric sand to seal joints."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

To determine if you need new asphalt paving in Silver Spring, look for widespread "alligator" cracking or significant settling, which often indicates base failure and requires full repaving. In contrast, small, isolated potholes can be patched, and minor linear cracks can be sealed. If you see standing water after rain, you may need drainage work before any paving is done.

Helpful?

In Silver Spring, MD, you can find several contractor types for your asphalt paving needs. Full-service companies handle entire installations from excavation to paving, while residential specialists focus on driveways. For protective treatments and crack filling, you should hire a sealcoating and maintenance specialist. Some contractors even offer both concrete and asphalt services, which is helpful for properties needing mixed materials.

Helpful?

In Silver Spring, asphalt paving starts out smooth and durable, but over time, exposure to seasonal temperature swings and moisture leads to gradual wear. Early on, you might notice hairline cracks or slight fading. By 10 to 15 years, more pronounced cracks and minor surface depressions can develop. Without regular maintenance and sealcoating, resurfacing or even full replacement may be needed after about 20 years.

Helpful?

For small cracks under ¼ inch, clean the area thoroughly and apply a crack sealant when the weather is dry. Minor potholes can be patched with cold-mix asphalt, ensuring the surface is compacted well. Regularly remove debris and weeds from edges to prevent further damage. Always use gloves and eye protection, and avoid working during extreme Silver Spring temperatures to ensure repairs are both safe and effective.

Helpful?

In Silver Spring, widespread alligator cracking, deep potholes, or areas that remain wet after rain suggest underlying structural issues. If you notice uneven surfaces, significant fading, or crumbling along the driveway edges, these are signs that previous paving or resurfacing may be failing. When routine maintenance no longer holds up through seasonal changes, it’s time to consult a local paving professional.
