"Mr. George (owner of R. George’s Paving in Gaithersburg, MD) just finished replacing my asphalt driveway. He and his men did a nice job, and the new driveway looks great. I highly recommend that anyone considering replacing or resurfacing their driveway give R. George’s Paving a call."

Customers say: True professional

"We have a slight hill at the end of our gravel driveway, which washed out pretty badly during the recent hurricane rains. I was looking for someone to repair this, and get us another year out of the gravel driveway before we have it paved. I called three different companies, and Bill Cooper was the one who gave me the best explanation of what needed to be done. He wasn't trying to push me towards an expensive new driveway, but rather gave me options to do it right. In the end, we covered the loose gravel with a milling base, which looks better and sets me up to pave the driveway in a year or so, when it has appropriately settled. I think Bill really knows his stuff, and I'm very happy with the way things turned out."

"Driveway looks great now. Crew was able to come out quickly and got the job done in less than a day. Price wasn't the cheapest offer I received, but not the most expensive, either. In all, a fair value."

"We worked with Cleber and his team at XtraCare to redo our driveway and our back patio. The result of both projects is nothing short of outstanding. They helped us to partner with the River Smart Program on the driveway which ultimately led to significant savings on the job. As the weather changes and you are looking for a company to transform your outdoor space, look no further than Xtra Care. I enthusiastically recommend this company."

"Joe and the crew from E Stanley did a great job widening our driveway. The job consisted of three parts. First, dig under the existing driveway and remove the roots that were growing underneath. Second, dig a couple of feet on both sides of our existing driveway to widen it out. Finally, pour asphalt on top of the driveway to replace the old one. Joe came in at the best price and finish the entire job in a single day.."

"Very thorough preparation--removal of prior driveway, substantial excavation to permit required base of crushed stone and sand, concrete footings around perimeter of driveway to stabilize edges of paver driveway. Very nice work setting pavers, setting trim pavers on edges, trimming pavers to fit where driveway wasn't square, and applying polymeric sand to seal joints."

"Some context for the work... Our house was  a "flip" that was completed in June 2013 and we purchased in July 2013.  That winter we had water in the basement from the foundation walls leaking and the sump pump catch areas not covering the entire perimeter of the basement.  The company who flipped the house extended the sump pump area and split the cost with us, despite the 1-year warranty in DC which states they should have covered it all.  6 months later, still within the 1 year warranty time frame, the water was coming in through a different area that they did not cover.  This time, the company had a drainage company do an assessment and, again, split the cost of the repairs.
Here we are a year later and again water came in the basement after it rained for a week. I had the same company who came out last year come back and provide another estimate...$17,000, $12,500 of which was excavation! No, thank you!
This is where MA Landscaping and Design comes in... We saw a crew completing some work down the street and got their business card to call for an evaluation and estimate.  There was a minor issue that the scheduled time of the estimate where the original scheduled evaluator would not be able to make it out to our house, instead of cancelling and rescheduling, the owner, Lili, came out and did the estimate for us that day.  Lili sent us the estimate for raising the patio and installing a drain underneath, putting jack stones along our driveway, putting a french drain system along the side of our house and some other minor edging and lawn maintenance.  She told us that if we accepted the estimate that day she could have a crew out to the house the next day.  We were satisfied with the estimate for $3,150 and immediately accepted. The crew was back the next day and had completed the majority of the digging and preparing the area for the french drain, raising the patio and adding the jack stones.  The following day it rained so the crew could not complete the project, but they were at our house the following morning and finished all the work by 4 pm.  When we spoke to Lili after the work was completed, she told us that there was a hole in the foundation underneath the work that the other company had previously completed that was basically feeding water to our basement. She said that the crew got some additional concrete and filled the hole and ensure there was not an opening for water to go into the basement.
The crew was very thorough and completed everything exactly as stated in the estimate, plus some.  The crew, mowed our lawn in both the back where the work was being completed and in the front.  The patio and drainage system is done perfectly and I almost want another torrential down pour just to validate the work they did.
I have a lot of confidence in MA Landscape and Design and will definitely be using them for any future landscape needs!

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

To ensure you hire a reliable and experienced paving company, you should start by finding companies in your area that have at least five to ten years of experience working in your neighborhood. Next, rule out companies with poor reviews online or a series of complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau. Since driveways affect your curb appeal, you should also ask each company for references and pictures of recent work to make sure the work the company does is professional and high quality. Finally, check that the company is licensed and insured.

An asphalt overlay or top coat costs between $3 and $7 per square foot. For a standard, single-car driveway that’s 10 feet wide and 20 feet long, that’s a total of between $600 and $1,400. For a two-car driveway, you’re looking at a total of between $1,200 and $3,000.

Gravel is the cheapest way to extend a driveway. Gravel is an affordable, practical option that’s easy to install and perfect for DIY projects, helping you save on labor costs. It can be quickly spread and leveled to create extra driveway space without heavy preparation. While gravel doesn’t offer the same durability or finished look as concrete or asphalt, its low cost makes it ideal for budget-conscious homeowners who want a functional solution without overspending.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

At a depth of two inches, a ton of asphalt covers around 80 to 100 square feet. However, the thicker the asphalt, the less surface area it will cover. That’s why measuring correctly is essential when estimating asphalt needs and costs to ensure you get enough material to cover your entire driveway, patio, or other asphalt surface.
