"Excellent. It required taking part of the frame apart - semi-complicated project. There's no way I could have done this as cleanly without damaging the entire thing. I don't recall the name off hand of the guy who was here, but he struck me as versatile and capable. And the front office who took my order seemed to be work to get me the right guy. I think I have found a new handyman."

Helpful?

Before starting a handyman project in Silver Spring, consult Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services and the Maryland Department of Labor to confirm permit and inspection requirements. Create a detailed project timeline, secure all necessary approvals, and order materials early to avoid supply delays. Consider scheduling preliminary inspections and reviewing local zoning rules to ensure your project aligns with neighborhood guidelines and avoids unexpected setbacks.

Helpful?

In Silver Spring, DIY projects can save on labor costs and offer personal satisfaction, especially for basic repairs. However, hiring a licensed professional ensures code compliance, proper permitting, and adherence to Montgomery County and Maryland Department of Labor requirements. DIY work may risk code violations or missed permits, while professionals streamline inspections and help avoid costly mistakes, especially for electrical, plumbing, or multi-trade projects.

Helpful?

For Silver Spring homes, keep a sturdy ladder for two-story properties, a moisture meter for basement checks, and exterior-grade caulk for window sealing. Essential tools include a cordless drill, stud finder, and plumbing wrench. Stock up on gutter guards and leaf blowers to manage debris from mature trees, and have weatherproof paint on hand for regular touch-ups and home repairs.

Helpful?

In Silver Spring, most handyman projects involving structural changes, electrical, plumbing, or HVAC work require permits. For example, building a deck or altering wiring needs approval from Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services and may also require compliance with the Maryland Department of Labor's regulations. Always verify with both authorities before starting, as even minor upgrades can impact local building codes and safety standards.
