Called Ibbotson, and they were able to move my appointment up to the following day. Rich was on time, thorough, and gave us a very good quote. He called to verify stock on the unit we needed, and was able to schedule a team for install the next day. Install team was on time and very professional. They took good care to make sure they didn't damage our house or floors. Advised on everything they were doing, and why it was important. Hauled everything away efficiently. No attempts to upsell to things we didn't request/need. Gave great advice on how to keep the system running smoothly for years. On the one very minor "damage" item (leaked a small amount of oil on driveway), they called my attention to it, cleaned it up with a drying compound, and advised on how to make it gone. After looking at the two systems both insisted they couldn't be fixed and needed to be replaced at a cost of $25-30k. Looking for a third opinion I called Pawel at American Air Experts. He was great! Took a look at the systems and quickly found one needed to be charged and the other had a shut off switch that had been tripped. In about 2 hours both systems are working as new. Cost me a few hundred dollars. Can't tell you how happy I am with American Air Experts! Total experts and they operate with honesty and integrity."

Abnormal sounds such as grinding, banging, or hissing, and unpleasant smells like mustiness or burning are also potential warning signs. A rise in energy costs without an increase in usage may also imply decreased efficiency. An HVAC system that frequently cycles on and off or cannot maintain a stable temperature is malfunctioning.

One of the fastest ways to unfreeze an AC unit is to turn off the unit and, if it’s warm outside, use the fan-only mode to help blow warmer air through the unit to speed up the defrosting process. While it may be tempting to use a hair dryer to defrost the air conditioner, that high heat can damage the coils.

After defrosting, if you can safely solve the issue with a fix like changing the filter, go ahead and do so. Otherwise, call in a pro before turning your AC back on.

There are several steps you can take to prevent your AC drain from clogging. This includes cleaning the drain line at least every three months, changing the filter every one to three months, and getting your AC serviced annually. Also, if any problems arise with your AC, hire an HVAC technician to deal with them ASAP.

AC leaks are common, and an HVAC pro can usually fix them. You may be able to resolve some leaks on your own, but a professional HVAC technician should handle most AC leak repair. If left ignored, an AC leak could cause serious damage to your system or leave you with expensive water damage, usually leading to more costly repairs or replacements.

Most units are designed only to cool the house down to 20 degrees less than the temperature outside. This means that if it’s 99 degrees Fahrenheit out and you’re trying to cool your home down to 65 degrees, you’ll notice your AC is struggling. 

Lower the blinds on all your windows, turn on your ceiling fans, and keep the thermostat at a consistent temperature to help your AC do its job. Investing in an HVAC maintenance plan also helps because pros will come out to inspect and tune up your unit regularly, keeping it in optimal working condition.
