"The unit is very old and it's not worth fixing as it needs to be replaced. The technician was very knowledgeable and informed me of my options. I have been using Shavitz for years and they replaced my main HVAC unit a few years back. They always come through and make it happen. When other companies say no, they try and come up with solutions to help."

"Vinny came over to my home the same day to give an estimate as I needed to replace my exisiting humidifier. I already knew it wasn’t working and super old so best to replace it. He explained everything to me when looking at my furnace room. Explained the different size and efficiency of the various models I could use with the size of my home. Quick to schedule installation as well :) I will definitely use this company for future HVAC needs!"

"They came early in the morning for a new HVAC install. Everything went well. They were neat and clean. The price was well below a comparable system from another company. They provided several options to replace out ageing HVAC system"

"Coldest Polar Vortex in history -44F, our 10+ year old furnace said no more. Travis, from Lifeline was here in 3 hours. We upgraded to a dual stage, 96%ECM, 100,000 BTU, HVAC. Travis also was able to get us a $450 ComEd rebate. Before leaving, he loaned us new, highly efficient space heaters, while they picked up our new system. Bob and John completed installation within 3 hours, no breaks. Its worth noting they also installed our A/C in 2017 with the same elitist standards as our new HVAC. I would highly recommend to family and friends. Lifeline has become like family, -perfectionist till the end. My hat is off to you, Lifeline."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, a frozen AC unit can affect your indoor air quality since the reduced airflow won't be as effective at removing air pollutants, like dust and other allergens. Additionally, ice around the unit can create excess moisture, leading to mold and mildew that can damage your home if you don’t catch it early.

AC evaporator coils should be cleaned at least once per year to keep your unit in good condition. For optimal performance, consider cleaning them twice a year—once before and once after the main cooling season. More frequent cleanings may be necessary for older systems, units with performance issues, or those in climates with high levels of humidity, dust, and dirt.

You should use a breathable, weather-resistant cover with ventilation. It can be a top cover or a full cover that has mesh to allow airflow. A full, non-breathable cover can cause moisture to build up, leading to rust, frozen parts, and corrosion. A full cover also attracts unwanted critters, such as mice, that can damage the wiring and your unit. If you need to protect your AC unit from falling icicles, choose a sturdy top cover or piece of wood that prevents icicles from damaging your unit.

One of the first signs of mold in an air conditioner is a musty smell. You're likely to notice the smell when the unit runs, from the air coming out of the vents or the unit itself. You may also be able to see mold growing on the unit, such as near the condenser coils or by the fan. In some cases, there may be visible mold by the vents.

Yes, it’s best to turn off an AC unit that’s blowing hot air to prevent system damage and avoid expensive energy bills. If you let the AC continue running, it will put more strain on the condenser coil and compressor. Plus, if the AC is blowing hot air because of a refrigerant leak, it can also lead to a frozen evaporator coil.
