"I hired Top Rail Fence for two separate projects this Spring. First I had them replace 3 broken posts in a non-traditional fence at the rear of my property. The posts had broken off just above ground and needed to be replaced in a way that the fence would be in the same line with the rest of the fence. They posts were not only anchored in concrete but also had concrete poured them from the neighbors patio. The second task was to replace a dilapidated fence on the south property line. This was done to our complete satisfaction Bot installers, Francisco and his crew ands Mike (and son) did excellent work and followed our particular directions on how we wanted the project to look at completion to our complete satisfaction. The installers were professional, courteous and respectful of our property. They also cleaned up the site when they were finished. We are completely satisfied with Top Line Fence and recommend them highly to anyone needing fencing projects done. 5 Stars"

"Extremely efficeint and do a terrific job. Called for a bid and I accepted it on the spot. They came out as scheduled, on time, and with a crew that was really good at everything they did, Cleaned up all my planted areas and installed new fencing around my patio. This crew is not afraid to work, and are open to any changes you might have to make. Thank you Erika, and the GANG for such great service."

"Troy did a great job repairing our fence. He has good prices, is dependable and does quality work. He reused as much fencing as he could to keep the coat down."

"Tom and Josh Turney did an amazing job for us! They removed our old cedar fence and replaced it with a beautiful new cedar fence with solid, and sturdy black steel fence posts. This fence will not only last much longer than our old fence with wooden posts but it is a beauty to look at. We will be enjoying our backyard for many years to come."

"Don provided a competitive bid for my fence project and completed the job within a very short time schedule. The materials and work are top notch and the 115' of fencing plus two gates were completed in two days. I'm very happy with the project and would recommend this company for any similar fencing work."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a fence can range from 5 to 50 years, depending heavily on the material, local climate, and how well it is maintained. For example, a wooden fence might last 7 to 15 years, while a vinyl fence typically lasts 20 to 30 years. Metal, composite, and glass fences have some of the longest lifespans. Proper maintenance, such as regular cleaning, inspections, and staining or sealing for wood, is key to extending the life of any fence material. Vinyl and composite are durable options that don't require sealing.

The most common hog wire gauge for a fence is 12.5. However, you can choose from a few gauges based on your needs. While 12.5 is a reliable gauge for penning in large, strong animals, 9 gauge is a better option of you have large animals that are easily spooked, such as horses. For smaller animals, like dogs or pigs, you can use a 16 gauge hog wire.

A setback is an area of space between your fence and the property line, meaning you build a fence a few inches before your neighbor’s property begins. You can build your fence on a setback—some communities recommend this—but this means a sliver of your property will be on your neighbor’s side of your fence.

The ideal distance between fence posts depends on several factors, including the terrain, the purpose of the fence, and the material used. For different types of fences, here are some general guidelines:

  • Wood and Metal Fences: Posts should be spaced between 5 and 8 feet apart.

  • Vinyl Fences: Spacing can be between 6 and 8 feet.

  • Chain-Link, Mesh, or Lattice Fences: Posts can be set anywhere from 4 to 25 feet apart, with 4-10 feet being common for chain-link.

  • Wire Fences: Spacing can be up to 12 feet apart.

Most people prefer to keep the fence level by “stepping” the fence when running a horizontal fence over a slope. Stepping involves raising each panel between the posts as the fence moves over changes in slope, giving the fence line the appearance of stair steps. While this may be the preferred method of running a horizontal fence up a slope, there’s nothing wrong with installing your fence so it follows the undulations in the ground instead.
