"Excellent job from beginning to end. They laid down 130’ of plywood to run the skid loader from the road to the spot in the backyard. Only one small narrow rut/grass removed in the yard where the skid loader slid a board while turning the corner around the garage. I'd never ever think of complaining about that. Can't even imagine the number of trips made across those boards. 14 ton of dirt and around 4 yards of concrete was moved on those boards. Definitely impressed with over-excavating and compacting rock, great job vibrating the concrete which left very few noticeable air holes and putting on cure-n-seal when not asked. Great job on the finish and they removed the remaining plywood chips with a thatch rake leaving little to no signs they were even here."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

When hiring a structural engineering professional in Des Moines, prioritize those with proven experience handling local soil movement, historic home renovations, and flood-resistant construction. Ensure they understand regional building codes and have strong relationships with area contractors. Ask about their approach to structural integrity in older homes and request references from recent Des Moines projects to confirm their expertise with the city’s unique challenges.

Helpful?

In Des Moines, overlooking basement waterproofing, failing to control indoor humidity, and ignoring minor wall or ceiling cracks can all impact your home’s structural integrity. Allowing gutters to clog or water to pool near your foundation is especially risky with local clay soils. Attempting DIY modifications to support beams or removing walls without expert input can further compromise stability, particularly given Des Moines’ freeze-thaw cycles and shifting ground conditions.

Helpful?

Before beginning structural engineering projects in Des Moines, review your property’s drainage patterns and check for signs of previous settlement or moisture issues. Arrange for a soil stability assessment, as local soils can shift significantly. Schedule necessary inspections early, since demand peaks during the warmer months. Confirm all required city permits are secured and coordinate with neighbors if work may affect shared property lines or access.

Helpful?

In Des Moines, homes with stone or rubble foundations, visible bowing walls, or evidence of repeated water intrusion often present complications for structural engineering projects. Properties on sloped lots or near creeks may require special drainage solutions. If your home has undergone previous unpermitted alterations or shows signs of foundation settlement, such as sticking doors or sloping floors, consult a local structural engineer for a thorough assessment before starting work.

Helpful?

Completing structural engineering projects in Des Moines enhances your home’s comfort and safety by addressing issues like uneven floors, drafts, or persistent dampness. Reinforcing foundations and improving basement waterproofing can prevent moisture intrusion, while structural upgrades help your home withstand severe weather. Open-concept renovations and additions not only increase usable space but also boost energy efficiency and long-term market value in the Des Moines area.
