"Original project was estimated with removing existing fence posts (18 total), leveling to proper fence height, pouring cement to set repositioned post, and replacing broken gate hinges. Estimate provided by Eli. When A&E arrived and started removing first couple of posts, Eli?s father, most experienced member of crew, noticed the existing post cement had not heaved. So he felt removing existing posts was not necessary. Instead he recommended pounding the posts back down into existing concrete until level and drilling holes in posts to allow new concrete to create more of an anchor to keep them from sliding out of concrete base. This eliminated a lot of manual work and lessened damage to yard. I thought this was a good idea and thought the cost of the job would reflect a lesser amount since this cut the total job time more than half. Instead they did not adjust the bill accordingly. I would expect a company to treat their customers fairly and not overcharge when the planned work changes without the customer complaining or requesting such. Instead I ended paying the original estimate ($1,400), which equates to approx. $150 / hour (crew of 3), plus materials. Total job completed in 2.5 - 3 hours, which was great. I think this was extremely high for 1 highly skill worker and 2 apprentices. I gave A&E 4 stars because they did do a good job. Fence looks great. I just feel like it should have been a little less $ for the amount of work they ended up having to do. I did examine the original estimate and it only stated leveling the fence, no specifics on how this was to be done. But verbally it was understood they would have to dig out new fence posts, re-level and re-cement. Lessons learned on my part?get a detailed contract and if the actual work deviates, then adjust final bill."

"Hoss was wonderful, friendly, efficient, everything we could have asked for. We needed our fence done fast. And in two half days(dude to the rain) they had our old fence and trees down and the new fence up. He addressed our concerns happily. And even went the extra mile to block off another area for us for no extra charge"

Fencing questions, answered by experts

Des Moines experiences freeze-thaw cycles and heavy spring rains, which can affect fence stability and installation timing. Spring and fall are ideal for fencing projects due to milder temperatures and workable soil. The City of Des Moines recommends avoiding winter installations, as frozen ground complicates post setting. Selecting weather-resistant materials and planning around local climate patterns helps ensure long-lasting results.

Helpful?

For Des Moines fencing projects, pressure-treated wood is popular for its classic look and resilience against IA's variable weather, though it requires regular maintenance. Vinyl is favored for low maintenance and durability, especially in areas with frequent freeze-thaw cycles. Aluminum offers rust resistance, while chain link remains a practical, budget-friendly choice. Consult local suppliers familiar with Des Moines' climate for the best material options.

Helpful?

In Des Moines, fencing permits are generally required if your fence exceeds 3 feet in a front yard or 4 feet for chain link or wire fences in side or rear yards, as outlined by the City of Des Moines Permit and Development Center. Retaining walls over 48 inches also need permits. Always review local fence height regulations and submit a site plan for approval before starting your project.

Helpful?

In Des Moines, common fencing mistakes include building without a permit, misjudging property lines due to lack of a property survey, and ignoring local fence height regulations. Using untreated wood or shallow posts can lead to premature rot or instability, especially with IA's wet springs. Consulting the City of Des Moines Permit and Development Center and following local guidelines helps prevent these costly errors.

Helpful?

Before starting a fencing project in Des Moines, verify property lines with a professional property survey to prevent boundary disputes. Review fence height regulations and material restrictions from the City of Des Moines Permit and Development Center. Call 811 to mark underground utilities, clear the installation area, and apply for all necessary permits. These steps help ensure compliance and avoid costly project delays.
