"Amazing service! Chad arrived 20-minutes after I called him. He diagnosed the problem quickly, serviced the unit, and hit his quote dead on. I will be calling him every time I need HVAC service. Eric F. Ventura, CA"

"Mike Alamillo was a wonderful person! I pestered him for prices and model numbers for HVAC equipment and he patiently supplied me with information. (I suggest that we customers do our research before we pester contractors. ;-)) He and his crew were very polite, very professional, and did an outstanding job. I'd recommend SW Heating & AC to anyone!"

"It was installed with a kink in the condensation hose and was not aware that it leaked under our hallway wood floor. This was June 2022. I paid to have a leak detection company come out and say the floor was OK. In August 2022, we ran HVAC for a couple of days during the heat wave and water came out of the HVAC unit, ruining our hallway wood floor. It is 10/29/2022 and we still have not heard from their office on how they are going to fix our floor."

"We initially had another AC company come out to service our A/C as it was not working properly. They came out 2 days did some stuff but were unable to get the system working properly. We then called 72 Mechanical to come out and they were able to get the system back up and running within 2 hours of coming out. They came out when they said they would; were extremely professional and talked us through the problem as they were fixing the problem. I would highly recommend this company as they are professional and knowledgeable"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Aside from needing HVAC repair, there are times when you may need to replace your unit. HVAC replacement costs $5,000 to $12,500. Here are some telltale signs that your HVAC unit is going bad:

  • Your unit is 10 years or older.

  • Your home is very humid.

  • The unit keeps cycling without producing cool air.

  • You need to repair the unit frequently.

A common HVAC rule is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of living space, you need 1 ton of heating or cooling capacity. Now that you know this common rule, you also need to know that it isn’t very accurate, and a dedicated pro wouldn’t use it for your home. If you talk to a pro who won’t or can’t perform a proper Manual J calculation, consider hiring someone more thorough.

A non-maintained AC is more likely to perform poorly, increase your energy bills, and undergo more severe issues like breakage and water damage. That’s why DIY cleaning or professional maintenance is recommended annually. Otherwise, you might end up paying more in the end than you would for annual service. You can purchase cheap AC cleaning kits if you prefer going the DIY route.

After a while, dust, dirt, and other debris accumulates on an AC unit's coils and filters, making it less efficient and spreading allergens and other air pollutants throughout your home. Cleaning your AC unit will keep it running efficiently, minimizing future breakdowns and improving your indoor air quality.

They can, but it’s not as common. Window AC units are much smaller than whole-house systems and less likely to develop refrigerant leaks or similar issues. As a result, you will rarely need to add a new refrigerant, limiting overcharging problems. However, it’s still important to leave refrigerant management in the hands of professionals when window units need work.
