"I absolutely love my backsplash that was installed this week by Patriot Flooring! Thomas and Phil did an amazing job and James and Tammy were great to work with. Thomas was not only exceptional at the tile installation, but also had great customer service and attention-to-detail. He made sure I was happy with the work each step of the way and was also so mannerful with a great attitude! Phil was awesome in his work and did a great job making sure I stayed informed along the way. Both of them were true professionals and made sure I was happy with the outcome! Thank you guys! ?"

"Ben Sowinski sets the bar very high for all home contractors! Our Master bathroom remodel went smoothly from the beginning of the job right up until the end. Ben was in constant contact with us about scheduling, deliveries, and work progress. He was so great to work with. Above all, the installation of the marble tiles was flawless. Absolute perfection! We highly, highly recommend Ben Sowinski."

"Finished kitchen tile project turned out great. I was concerned because of water damage from a leaky dishwasher but they pulled up wet vinyl and rescheduled the installation a few days until under subfloor dryed out. Everything turned out well."

"After a consultation with Kenny on the work I needed done, I hired VA Brick Doctor. Kenny repointed steps on the front and back porch, and repaired couple areas on porch where tiles were cracked and loose. Due to rainy weather I had to wait a few weeks before he could start but the wait was worth it. Kenny and his assistant arrived early and worked in hot, humid conditions. Kenny is easy to work with, meticulous, and knows his trade. I was very pleased with his work. It has been a year since the work was done and everything looks great."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Like glass tiles, you will not need to seal most porcelain tiles, particularly if the porcelain is already glazed. It depends on quality. Porcelain is very water resistant, but it is not 100% waterproof. To avoid staining, some homeowners use a penetrating sealer. It is also a good idea to seal your grout. Unless you use epoxy grout, grout is very porous and can harbor bacteria, mold, and mildew.

How long painted tiles last ultimately comes down to the quality of the paint job and how much wear and tear the tiles get. It’s possible the paint job will only last about six months if the tiles are in a high-traffic area and they weren’t properly cleaned, sanded, and primed prior to painting and sealing. Well-painted tiles in a low-traffic area should last at least a year.

It’s best to start with tiling the shower floor before moving on to the walls for the most visually-pleasing results. When taking on any tiling project, you’ll want the wall tiles to “sit” neatly on the floor tiles rather than overlapping them. Finishing your floor tiles first will allow you to place your wall tiles without any gaps, holes, or awkward intersections.

Tile floor installation usually takes about 16 hours of active work along with a couple of days of drying time between tile and grout applications.

The amount of time it takes your installer will depend on many factors, including the square footage of the space, the tile material type, and if they need to make intricate tile cuts.

Lack of durability is the most significant downside of painting tile. However, a painted tile backsplash doesn't see the same kind of action as, say, painted flooring tiles. For backsplashes, the durability of the finish is crucial because they often require cleaning. However, you can minimize the durability problem by using mild cleaners and water on the painted surfaces.
