"I put in two requests-for-quote on Tuesday 15 January. Within hours, Mr. Handyman of Richmond responded to my requests--and to this date the other two have not. The description by the telephone receptionist impressed me from the beginning: one company, not a contractor with subcontractors, recognizable to any homeowner and recognized in the industry. I accepted the quote, because frankly I was in a hurry to get the job done. The technician did the first job within hours. This included driving out to buy new doorknobs and deadbolts, plus a key-lockable and re-key-able front-door latch and deadbolt set. At the end of the job I had doorknobs that would stay on without coming off in my hand (as the originals did--twice), and four doors all on the same key. I also had a new deadbolt on the garage door and a front door that I could double lock. While he was here I asked him to see to a seam that had opened in some drywall, and remounting a toilet paper dispenser in a bathroom. The second job he finished in about five minutes; the first he agreed to come back for. On the second day he called his office to have them call me--this because I was too far away to hear him knock. So when I let him in, I suggested now would be a good time to install a wireless door chime and ringer set, and to repair a front-porch fixture I had never been able to unscrew. Note: I suggested these extra jobs; he did not push them on me. Except for my having to make two trips to a nearby hardware store to buy some batteries, he did all the work in record time. And because one of these jobs required letting some drywall mud dry before sanding, he was able to complete all these jobs at very little extra charge--because his company charges by the man-hour and materials, whatever the job happens to be. By using his time effectively and efficiently, I saved. The results are everything I could ask for, and getting all these jobs done is a special boon, particularly since I'm planning a long road trip. If I run across any other little thing that needs doing, I'll definitely call Mr. Handyman of Richmond first. I would recommend them without reservation to anyone having a little project."

"Wade was excellent in his customer service especially his patience and willing to listen to my specific needs and kept me informed everyday. He replaced the stripping around my garage and replaced a stand alone door. He also powerwashed, replaced wood planks, and spray painted my deck. He repaired holes in my vinyl siding, power wash the whole house. I am very pleased with his work and would hire him again without hesitation."

Handyman Services questions, answered by experts

In Williamsburg, regular maintenance is key after handyman work. For example, after deck repairs, inspect for moisture damage each spring due to local rainfall. Gutter cleaning should be scheduled twice yearly to prevent water intrusion, as recommended by the Williamsburg Building Inspections Division. Interior repairs like drywall may need touch-ups if humidity causes settling. Proactive maintenance tailored to Williamsburg's climate extends the life of your improvements.

Helpful?

In Williamsburg, choosing moisture-resistant supplies is key for lasting results. Opt for pressure-treated wood for decks and fences, composite decking for patios, and mold-resistant drywall in bathrooms. For exterior painting, select acrylic latex paint with built-in mildew resistance. Use attic insulation rated R-30 or higher, and install vapor barriers to combat humidity. These materials help your home maintenance projects withstand Williamsburg’s climate and seasonal weather shifts.

Helpful?

In Williamsburg, most handyman projects that involve structural changes, electrical, or plumbing work require permits, as outlined by the Williamsburg Building Inspections Division. Cosmetic repairs like painting or minor carpentry usually do not need permits, but any work impacting safety or code compliance must be reviewed. For accurate requirements, consult the Williamsburg Building Inspections Division or the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation before starting your project.

Helpful?

Completing handyman service projects in Williamsburg offers immediate benefits like improved comfort, better indoor air quality, and reduced energy bills. Over time, these home maintenance efforts help prevent costly repairs, boost property value, and ensure your house performs well in the local climate. Staying proactive also supports compliance with local building codes and helps preserve the unique character of Williamsburg’s historic homes.

Helpful?

In VA, DIY handyman projects can save on labor costs and offer flexibility, but lack of experience may lead to code violations or safety issues. Hiring a licensed professional ensures compliance with Virginia regulations and local codes, as required by the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. Pros handle permitting and inspections, reducing risk and ensuring quality—especially for complex or regulated tasks.
