"I put in two requests-for-quote on Tuesday 15 January. Within hours, Mr. Handyman of Richmond responded to my requests--and to this date the other two have not. The description by the telephone receptionist impressed me from the beginning: one company, not a contractor with subcontractors, recognizable to any homeowner and recognized in the industry. I accepted the quote, because frankly I was in a hurry to get the job done. The technician did the first job within hours. This included driving out to buy new doorknobs and deadbolts, plus a key-lockable and re-key-able front-door latch and deadbolt set. At the end of the job I had doorknobs that would stay on without coming off in my hand (as the originals did--twice), and four doors all on the same key. I also had a new deadbolt on the garage door and a front door that I could double lock. While he was here I asked him to see to a seam that had opened in some drywall, and remounting a toilet paper dispenser in a bathroom. The second job he finished in about five minutes; the first he agreed to come back for. On the second day he called his office to have them call me--this because I was too far away to hear him knock. So when I let him in, I suggested now would be a good time to install a wireless door chime and ringer set, and to repair a front-porch fixture I had never been able to unscrew. Note: I suggested these extra jobs; he did not push them on me. Except for my having to make two trips to a nearby hardware store to buy some batteries, he did all the work in record time. And because one of these jobs required letting some drywall mud dry before sanding, he was able to complete all these jobs at very little extra charge--because his company charges by the man-hour and materials, whatever the job happens to be. By using his time effectively and efficiently, I saved. The results are everything I could ask for, and getting all these jobs done is a special boon, particularly since I'm planning a long road trip. If I run across any other little thing that needs doing, I'll definitely call Mr. Handyman of Richmond first. I would recommend them without reservation to anyone having a little project."

"Wade was excellent in his customer service especially his patience and willing to listen to my specific needs and kept me informed everyday. He replaced the stripping around my garage and replaced a stand alone door. He also powerwashed, replaced wood planks, and spray painted my deck. He repaired holes in my vinyl siding, power wash the whole house. I am very pleased with his work and would hire him again without hesitation."

Handyman Services questions, answered by experts

Homeowners in VA often overlook permit requirements or attempt projects beyond their skill level, risking code violations or safety hazards. Failing to consult the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation or the local building department can lead to costly corrections. Underestimating the impact of Williamsburg's climate on materials is another frequent error. Always verify local codes and use materials suited to VA's weather for successful results.

Helpful?

In Williamsburg, homes with aging systems, visible moisture issues, or drafty windows often benefit from handyman service projects. If your house is older or located in a historic district, special attention may be needed for repairs and upgrades. High energy bills, signs of pest activity, or weather-related wear indicate it’s time for targeted home maintenance to improve comfort and efficiency.

Helpful?

In VA, DIY handyman projects can save on labor costs and offer flexibility, but lack of experience may lead to code violations or safety issues. Hiring a licensed professional ensures compliance with Virginia regulations and local codes, as required by the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. Pros handle permitting and inspections, reducing risk and ensuring quality—especially for complex or regulated tasks.

Helpful?

In Williamsburg, always turn off power at the breaker before tackling electrical repairs, especially in damp areas. For plumbing, locate and test your main water shut-off valve first. Regularly replace HVAC filters and clear debris from outdoor units to improve system efficiency. Use caulk to seal window and door gaps, and run a dehumidifier in basements to prevent moisture buildup common in Williamsburg homes.

Helpful?

For handyman projects in Williamsburg, choose materials that withstand the region's humidity and seasonal weather shifts, such as treated lumber for decks and mildew-resistant caulk for exteriors. Fasteners rated for outdoor use are essential for longevity. The Williamsburg Building Inspections Division recommends using code-compliant materials, especially for repairs involving structural or safety elements. Always select supplies suited to Williamsburg's climate for lasting results.
