R W Kilby Wire and Water has served the area since 1979, Class A Contractor, and insured. Contact our office for more information.

"The electrician replaced the plug, but the pump still didn’t work. He then found a switch on the wall that controlled the outlet. It was embarrassing; but in 25 years the switch had never been turned off, and we had forgotten its existence. Also, it was behind the opened door - but to his credit the repairman hunted it down and it worked."

Gas Logs questions, answered by experts

Oil furnaces don’t emit poisonous or highly flammable gases, making them less dangerous in your home than gas furnaces because they have a much lower chance of combusting. An oil furnace does pose the risk of causing a fire if it tips over, but it is generally considered safer compared to a gas furnace.

For one, natural gas is more affordable than electricity, meaning your wallet might see an overall savings over time. The biggest positive of installing a gas line is that gas-powered appliances will still work during a power outage, so your gas fireplace will keep your home warm and toasty during a blackout.

Most gas companies and utilities brokers will send a technician to relight a pilot light, but this may demand a service call fee. Contact your local gas company to inquire about available pilot light services. If it’s a no-go, just follow the aforementioned steps and light the manual boiler’s pilot light yourself.

No, you shouldn’t leave a gas line uncapped because it can allow gas to escape into your environment, which can lead to fires, explosions, and health hazards. That’s why it’s critical to properly cap and seal any unused gas lines as soon as you can. If you’re not comfortable with that, you can always call a licensed plumber to safely handle it for you.

Call 811 to locate and mark the gas lines at least three days before digging. In many areas, you can dig within 18 inches of the lines, though in some locations, the distance may be further. Check local regulations, as you may need a utility company representative onsite when digging. Document your calls to 811 and precautions taken to avoid gas lines. A homeowner can be held liable for hitting a gas line in some cases, but contacting the proper authorities and following all guidelines can offer protection.
