"Within a few hours of submitting my search in Angie's List for a company to empty my septic tank, R&E Chief Septic called to schedule the appointment and provide me with the cost. I was surprised at the quick response and immediately set up an appointment. They were on time and quickly went to work. I will definitely use them from now on!"

"Edwin, who did the work, was pleasant and efficient, and he did a fine job digging down to the top of the tank, pumping out the sludge, and restoring the surface of the soil nicely. There was one problem. My front, asphalt driveway is not designed to hold the weight of the truck, and he initially drove up onto the driveway. At the time I made the appointment, I emphasized that the truck was to be driven around back and not onto the driveway. I phoned the day of the appointment and reminded the office that the truck was to be driven to the back of the house and that I would show the driver where to enter the path behind the house. My guess is that the office did not communicate this information to Edwin."

"Rick Aits not only answered my initial call at night; showed up the next morning before 8am and diagnosed my issues. My pumping station pump and parts were over 26 years old so Rick replaced everything including pump, check valve, float controls, wiring outside box, wiring conduit and other miscellaneous parts the day after I was able to get both tanks pumped out. I couldn't be more satisfied with a 40 year pro with helper (20 years himself). I knew immediately that Rick knew this system inside and out and he even visually inspected my septic field and researched it at the county records. And for all that parts, materials and expertise his price was super reasonable. Thanks Rick and Mike!"

"The Pipe Doctor replaced the flush valve, the valve at the bottom of the toilet tank, the gasket between the toilet tank and the body of the toilet, and the valve at the wall. All the work was done well. Altogether, the work cost quite a lot more than I expected when I bought a $59 service call."

"Requested service to replace a failing PRV causing high static water pressure but low flow rate. This work was completed as expected without issue. A secondary leak near the PRV that was previously unknown was detected and fixed as well. This required a bit more work to cut into the wall and rebuild a more complicated series of connections. All done with satisfactory results and peace of mind that we no longer have a leak or water pressure issues."

"They were very prompt and did a professional job without any problems. I especially appreciated the constant updates of the status. My only complaint was that they quoted an estimate but stated all payments by credit card required a 2.5% surcharge, and they offered no office address for delivery of a check or payment to avoid charge. They did offer a PO box which obviously would have delayed the repair process several days. We, like most people that need septic repairs wished to have it done as soon as possible."

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

There is no standard depth for burying a septic tank; they are typically buried anywhere from 4 inches to 4 feet underground. The final depth depends on several factors, including the depth of your main sewer line, the height of the bedrock, soil type, local regulations, and the property's landscape. If you plan to grow grass or plants over the tank, a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches is recommended. Deeper tanks can be more difficult to locate, but a septic professional can help find it for you.

You can cover a septic tank riser with dirt, but it’s not always the best idea. If you have a plastic riser and you bury it, you can easily lose track of it since you won’t be able to find it with a metal detector. Make sure to clearly note where your rise is in your yard so that you’re able to access it easily the next time you or a septic pro needs it. Don’t bury the cover too deep or you could place too much stress on it and make it too difficult to access in the future.

Trenches are typically 12 to 24 inches deep and 8 inches wide. However, the required depth depends on the specific project and local ordinances. For example, a French drain may need to be 18 inches deep, while a water pipe might require a depth of 24 inches and a drainage pipe 36 inches. Your city or county may have specific regulations, so it's wise to consult with an excavation professional to determine the correct depth for your project.

How do you set your well’s pressure tank? All you need to do is first drain the tank of water and find the pressure switch. Remove the switch cover and adjust the switch with a wrench—clockwise to increase water pressure, and counter-clockwise to reduce it. Each complete turn of the nut on the switch should equal 2.5 psi. Once this is done, replace the switch cover. All that’s left is to adjust the pressure of the tank itself using an air compressor and a tire gauge to support the new setting.

A new water well pressure tank costs $300 to $500. If you choose to hire a plumber for the job, expect labor to cost $125 to $200. If the tank is difficult to access, labor will cost more. Diaphragm and bladder well pressure tanks have similar costs. One-compartment well pressure tanks are less costly, but they have a higher chance of waterlogging. Larger pressure tanks cost more and hold more water, but they don’t increase water pressure.
