"Zen windows was wonderful from start to finish. No hard sell, no deposit required, they kept in touch while we waited for the doors to be manufactured and delivered. The installers came on the scheduled day, on time, installed the doors, cleaned up and left. They were professional and friendly and my new doors are BEAUTIFUL!"

"We have had NovaExteriors replace all our gutters, windows, sliding doors and front door over the last several years from the contractor grade products that the town house was built with. We have been very pleased with everything. They installed our steel front door about 10 years ago and we started to have issues with the deadbolt not aligning with the door jam and the rubber sweep wearing out over time. I contacted NovaExteriors, made my appointment and they arrived right on time and performed the needed maintenance that was required. The door is back to being perfect. Once again, we were very pleased with NovaExteriors, their prompt arrival and the quality of work. You can't go wrong with NovaExteriors."

"Tony quickly installed all of the smart home appliances and repaired drywall around Nest systems (smaller than most smoke detectors) leaving a small gap from the old outdated systems. Painted ceiling areas that were patched to match the surrounding area. The video door bell replaced the standard door bell that had poor wiring and needed to be connected at the edge of the brick. Tony had completed these installs before and provided a number of helpful tips including a few tests to gauge the correct height for the install. All of the light installs, carpentry/drywall work, and painting were completed without any issues. I appreciate the way this company always cleans the area after repairs have been completed. I have been a regular customer for years and they never fail to meet our expectations. Our neighbors have echoed the similar experiences too."

"We have used Jim the Handyman several times over the years - they have always completed their work properly, on time and on budget. I thought I needed new slider doors, and they told me they could swap out the wheels which worked well. They also repaired our attic/roofline where some squirrels had chewed through and you can't even tell where it happened. We will continue to use them for projects large and small."

"The bottom of our cabinet under the kitchen sink had collapsed.  The representative from Vasquez and Son installed a sturdy new bottom in the cabinet.  He then fixed many of our closet doors that had come out of the track.  We were very pleased.

Doors questions, answered by experts

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Although some pet doors allow easier access for burglars or stray animals, there are ways to make pet doors more secure. To increase your home’s security, choose locking or electronically activated doors, use additional motion sensor security cameras, and install pet doors on a wall where door locking mechanisms are difficult to access.

Smart door locks are safe to use and are usually considered safer than traditional locks with keys. While all electronic devices can be hacked, that doesn’t happen nearly as frequently in real life as people may think. You can also invest in multiple locks of different types for enhanced security so you don’t rely solely on one smart lock.

Yes, you need to install a sill for an exterior door. A sill offers structural support for the doorframe and creates a place to install the threshold, which is essential for keeping water from seeping underneath the door and into the home. Door sills are not necessary for interior doors.

Installing a dog door into an existing door is a quicker, easier project than installing one in a wall. Installing a pet door into a wall requires cutting through your home’s drywall, ensuring no pipes or wires are cut, and sealing the new opening so as not to compromise the safety and stability of your home’s walls, all of which may be a bigger project than many homeowners are looking to undertake.
