"Ben and DNL did a great job. His work was exactly as explained to us, on the date that was scheduled, and his team made sure everting was in working order before leaving. We had landscaping work done a few days later and the landscapers stepped on some of the bulbs that lined our sidewalk entry. One quick call and DNL was back the next day and replaced them all at no cost. Hard to find that type of customer service these days. We enjoyed the experience so much that we’ve gone under contract with them for the next 5 years to have holiday lights installed. Highly recommended."

Holiday Decorating questions, answered by experts

First of all, don’t shop for bargain lights—often, you’ll end up with a faulty or broken strand, full of dead bulbs or less-than-luminous brightness. Choose quality lights that will last you many years—LED lights have been known to last as long as 100,000 hours. Second, plan ahead and purchase lights for next year’s Christmas during this year’s post-holiday sales. Finally, have a vision and a plan—if you know the measurements of your home, including any windows, doors, and outside bushes you wish to light up, you should be able to only purchase the necessary lights and not more than you need.

The average cost to have a professional install Christmas lights on a roof is about $420, with most homeowners spending between $220 and $650. Some companies may charge between $1.25 and $3 per square foot, excluding the cost of the lights. For extensive or complex jobs, the cost can exceed $1,000. While doing it yourself can save money, it is only recommended if you are comfortable working at heights.

If you are hosting a large party this year or have staged your home for potential buyers, having a professionally-decorated tree can make a big impact. Christmas tree decorating services can also be more than worth it if you're unable to reach the top of your tree and need assistance with precarious ladder work.

It’s not a good idea to mix LED and incandescent Christmas lights if you can avoid it. LEDs and incandescents can have significantly different electrical current needs. This difference can lead to a higher risk of problems and failure for both light strands. When possible, switch all your lights over to one kind or the other for the best results. Do not connect the different types of light strings to each other, and avoid linking them to the same circuit.

How many string lights can be on one outlet depends on a number of varying factors, including the total wattage of your circuit, the type of lights, the energy needs of the lights, and cord specifications. It’s better to play it safe here to protect your circuit, so figure out the max wattage of your circuit, compare that to the lights, and move on from there. Generally speaking, LED string lights require less energy than incandescent bulbs, translating to a higher number of lights per circuit.
