"I believe in life, the universe gifts us people when we need them. Mike and his crew at Capitol City Wood Works were one of these universal gifts our family was lucky to receive. We met Mike about 6 months ago, shortly after my FIL had passed away and my MIL could no longer take care of the house. Our goal was to sell the house. The first problem...the back deck (55ft x 25ft) with a not working pool (33ft x 20ft) in the middle of the deck needed major repairs and code upgrades. The second problem, my husband & I live across the country & were overseeing the repairs from 1,300 miles away. Using Angie's list we found 3 different contractors to interview for the job. Each interview we stated we wanted the deck to be safe, use the structure that is there and look good. Mike was the only contractor that did two important things: 1. he sought to understand our unique situation of distance & selling the house 2: he listened to what we wanted for repairing the deck rather than a new build"

"I hired Ernest to do multiple jobs preparing my home to list including framing, drywall, tile and painting. I live in the DFW area and I was nervous about coordinating all of this work at a distance. Ernest was great at communicating with me through the whole process via text and phone. He provided detailed quotes via email so I could see exactly what the scope of work entailed. He gave me regular updates including photos and videos on the progress of the work, giving me peace of mind. He was very flexible working around my tenants move out/clean up schedule. All the work he did looks great, and I know it will add value to the home. He definitely takes pride in his work, and it shows in the finished product. I recommend their services, and I won't hesitate to call if further work is needed!"

"Everything went great! My handrails on my stairs are secure and you can't even tell where they tore a hole in the wall when the handrail came out. The pumphouse shed is in place and looks great. The trim on my outside windows looks great. Everybody was very nice and helpful. I will DEFINITELY use them again!"

"Prestige Fence & Deck is a great company, Jon and his crew did an excellent job replacing my old wooden fence, I was so impressed with their workmanship that I had them rebuild my Patio deck and gazebo, they did a fantastic job on both and added beauty to my back yard, plus the price was super reasonable. Small jobs welcome

"Luis and his helper did a fabulous job on my 40 year old oak kitchen cabinets today. They look like new now! Also mirror frame and vanity in my bathroom were all water stained and ugly and now they are transformed! Luis is very skilled in many areas of carpentry and remodeling. Very nice guy too, explains things patientlly and listens to what you want. I recommend him for anything, He showed me impressive pictures of large projects he is done, but said he will take on even small projects. Great work!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You may need a permit to install your window seat. Even though it's an indoor modification, some municipalities require permits for any built-ins added to homes. Check with your carpenter or, if you're DIY-ing, do some research on your city's requirements.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

To calculate the number of linear feet of baseboard you’ll need, measure the length of each wall of the room you’re installing them in as close to the floor as possible, rounding up to the next full linear foot. If it’s your first DIY molding job, having a few extra feet on hand for miscuts is a good idea.

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.
