"Mike Griffen has vast experience and integrity. The initial bid was for the wood planking replacement for a small deck and a fence repair. After demolition of the upper planks, the support under structure was found to be rotten also. He immediately gave me another estimate for structural work and replacement. Now my deck is level, secure, and built with quality materials. I would recommend Mike and his team for any of your building needs. Gordon L Walling DDS"

"They completed the 50 foot fence replacement quickly and correctly. They responded to all correspondence. Scheduling was a breeze. The only hiccup in the work was they had trouble getting the spray stain right which was obvious. There was a little resistance to fixing that but re-stained the fence once I mixed the right color for them. I highly recommend them based upon my years of remodeling and difficulty in finding good contractors."

"Hector did an AMAZING job. He was very prompt, knowledgeable and respectful. He finished the job (Caulking the outside windows, repairing a whole in phrase ceiling and door) so fast that I ended up adding additional work (raised 2 lights for me). I would definitely hire this company again."

Customers say: Quality work

"We HIGHLY recommend Safe Space Construction-- Steve Abbott and his team! We bid out a large, 2-story deck project. Unfortunately, we did not select Safe Space Construction. The contractor that we selected â almostâ finished the job before they disappeared. We had invested a considerable amount in decks that were not properly finished, did not meet code, looked terrible, and were unsafe. I contacted Steve Abbott/Safe Space Construction and asked for help. Steve and his team took on the mess that the prior contractor left behind. They corrected the structural issues (literally taking up much/most of the decking that had been installed, fixing the structure, and reinstalling the decking) and the finishing issues, enhancing the overall look and usability of the deck. They gave us a stunning, functional, safe deck that we can enjoy for many years to come. Steveâ s team does exceptional work. They are reliable and focused on quality workmanship and materials. The pergola that Steve added improved the upper deck so much! We are happy to recommend Safe Space Construction for your next project. We are so thankful that they worked on ours."

Small jobs welcome

"Cory did a great job on repairing a section of my pool deck that was damaged as well as pointing out items that I had not seen myself. He is very conscientious and a good communicator. His quotes for the repair were reasonably priced. I will consider him for other projects as they come up."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.

Because adding a deck will yield a higher property value, you may have higher insurance costs. It’s important to follow the codes and regulations set by your local and state governments, so your insurance rates can be properly calculated. You may need an insurance revaluation after your deck is completed. The best course of action is to speak with an insurance professional to understand how adding a deck will impact your home’s insurance costs before you begin.

Before installing a deck, you must build a base for the deck to rest upon, often made of compacted soil or gravel. While gravel is an optional material, it helps with drainage. Some contractors also recommend installing a weed control membrane, which helps provide a solid foundation for the frame. In the case of an elevated deck, a pro will often lay down a concrete slab as a foundation.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.
