"Working with Mike and the crew from Capitol City Wood Works was an absolute pleasure! They did an outstanding job replacing the roof structure of our patio and stabilizing supports for our 3rd-floor deck. Communication with Mike was excellent, and the project stayed on schedule and within our budget. The crew's work on the patio and deck was top-notch, and they kept the worksite clean throughout the project. We are thrilled with the final results and highly recommend Capitol City Wood Works for any woodwork project. Thank you, Mike and the crew, for the fantastic work!"

"Prestige Fence & Deck is a great company, Jon and his crew did an excellent job replacing my old wooden fence, I was so impressed with their workmanship that I had them rebuild my Patio deck and gazebo, they did a fantastic job on both and added beauty to my back yard, plus the price was super reasonable. "Hector did an AMAZING job. He was very prompt, knowledgeable and respectful. He finished the job (Caulking the outside windows, repairing a whole in phrase ceiling and door) so fast that I ended up adding additional work (raised 2 lights for me). I would definitely hire this company again."

Customers say: Quality work

"We HIGHLY recommend Safe Space Construction-- Steve Abbott and his team! We bid out a large, 2-story deck project. Unfortunately, we did not select Safe Space Construction. The contractor that we selected â almostâ finished the job before they disappeared. We had invested a considerable amount in decks that were not properly finished, did not meet code, looked terrible, and were unsafe. I contacted Steve Abbott/Safe Space Construction and asked for help. Steve and his team took on the mess that the prior contractor left behind. They corrected the structural issues (literally taking up much/most of the decking that had been installed, fixing the structure, and reinstalling the decking) and the finishing issues, enhancing the overall look and usability of the deck. They gave us a stunning, functional, safe deck that we can enjoy for many years to come. Steveâ s team does exceptional work. They are reliable and focused on quality workmanship and materials. The pergola that Steve added improved the upper deck so much! We are happy to recommend Safe Space Construction for your next project. We are so thankful that they worked on ours."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, it is possible to build a small, basic deck for $5,000, particularly if you use less expensive materials and a simple design. To stay within this budget, consider a size under 10x12 feet and use affordable materials like pressure-treated wood or cedar. While the general cost for deck building ranges from $4,350 to $12,560, with an average around $8,200, some projects can be completed for as little as $4,350. You can also save on labor costs by doing the work yourself, but be aware that mistakes could end up costing more than hiring a professional. A contractor may have a higher upfront cost, but they can ensure a safe, stable deck that will last.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.

Yes, and in some cases, frozen ground may improve the digging process for footings due to sturdier conditions. It’s easier than working in muddy conditions, which are more common in the spring. Contractors may use machinery that makes this step a breeze, so harder ground shouldn’t affect the building process.

When sourced responsibly, the most sustainable wood decking options are timber trees like redwood, pine, Douglas fir, Nootka cypress, and Western red cedar. These tree species are fast-growing with low carbon emissions. Plus, most timber woods make durable deck materials because of their resistance to rot and decay over time.

The cost to repair a deck is between $900 and $3,500, depending on the cause and extent of the damage. For example, fixing a sinking deck caused by pest damage can cost between $200 and $600, while replacing sinking boards costs between $500 and $4,000.
