"Mike Griffin and his team do great work - a few years ago we had them build a garden gate and gazebo, working from our design ideas and taking it to an artistic level - we still get compliments on the gate with its unique grille design! This latest job was mostly repair of an older deck including a new cover, a water-damaged patio enclosure and replacing a section of fence. So, a diverse set of building repair skills/techniques, all handled by Mike's crew in one job. John's masonry repair on the patio post is excellent, for example. Mike is very thoughtful and creative about problem-solving with older homes that have been remodeled several times. He assessed some roof damage as well and gave me advice on when it should be replaced."

Small jobs welcome

"He came on time; did the work quickly and did a great job. They were not the lowest quote I got, but was able to come right away and take care of it promptly. I would hire again when the need arises."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

While framing a basement is not as difficult as finishing a basement, it's something you should typically leave to the pros. That’s because if something is installed correctly, it will affect your entire basement. However, you can take care of some of the smaller tasks, like filling holes or putting up some insulation.

House framing can be expensive because the materials are pricey, and the job requires a high level of expertise. The more complex the plans, the more expensive the job, but even the most basic frame needs to be installed with high-quality materials and precision. When pricing your home’s framework, remember that a sturdy frame is necessary to create a safe structure.

Costs depend on desk size, labor, included features like drawers or motorized height adjustments, and required wall anchoring.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

You can choose 5/8-inch plywood or 3/4-inch plywood—anything thinner than these sizes may not withstand the impact of debris propelled by strong winds or can be easily torn off by intruders. Remember that the durability of the wood board is crucial, particularly for safeguarding your windows during severe storms. The effectiveness of using wood boards for protecting the investment you made in your home relies on using the appropriate material and ensuring proper installation.
