Mold can begin to grow in as little as 12 to 24 hours, especially if the room is warm, so drying the area is the first thing you should do after water damage. Vermiculite insulation that comes from a particular mine before 1990 is likely to contain asbestos. This is particularly true in the U.S. However, not all types of vermiculite insulation contain asbestos. Since you can't detect the presence of asbestos without special equipment, it's best to assume that the insulation contains the dangerous mineral and to either leave it alone or hire a professional to handle it.

Usually, when you have mold, you will notice that your indoor air quality isn’t what it should be. You might notice dank odors, for instance, coming from your carpet, and it may feel damp or spongy. Removing mold yourself can be dangerous. Always wear protective gear to cover your skin, face, and eyes, and wear a respiratory mask to protect your lungs. It is most recommended to only remove small areas of mold on your own and leave large mold growth to professionals. Mold growth can also be persistent. Without addressing the root cause, DIY surface cleaning can be ineffective and temporary.
