"With the removal of the carpet some dry rot was found due to poorly installed sliding glass door. This includes one of the main support beams holding up the second floor. It had to be strengthen and the subfloor replaced in about 55 square feet. As this was unexpected I asked that the repairs be time and material to which they honored. The additional cost was $1700 The floor and beam repair was completed and the original contract was finished. I was very pleased with the result."

Mold doesn’t require much airflow to make it out from behind walls and into your living space, making you sick. HVAC systems can actually pull the mold from behind walls and spread it through your home. While the mold may be out of sight, moisture transfer from the wall can also spread the mold from behind the wall into your living space and air. Black mold and wood rot are both types of fungi that form in damp or wet areas, but they cause different problems. Black mold grows on the surface of wood or other materials, while wood rot affects the structure of the wood material. Additionally, inhaling or contacting toxic black mold spores can make people sick. Wood rot spores are not known to cause illness in humans. 

Even though a thin layer of drywall may separate you from mold, it can still affect you. First, left untreated, that mold will continue to grow and spread throughout your home. Even if there weren’t the risk of spread, a patch of mold behind the drywall can still make you sick. Family members with allergies, asthma, and other respiratory conditions may be the most affected, but anyone can contract a cough or infection from the presence of mold—even behind drywall.

Painting over mold is not an effective solution and can actually make the problem worse. Instead, it traps moisture, which allows mold to grow and spread beneath the surface. Mold must be completely removed before painting to ensure the problem doesn’t recur. If mold is painted over, it may eventually seep through the new layer of paint, causing discoloration and peeling.

It‘s risky to pressure wash indoors, and we wouldn’t recommend it, but following all safety guidelines can prevent the worst outcomes. Always make sure to use an electric-powered machine over one that’s gas-powered, remove obstacles that could cause tripping or falling, and keep appliances like hair dryers and toothbrushes unplugged and out of the way to prevent electrical hazards.
