"The old fence was too far gone for a simple repair, so a replacement fence was built. The new fence looks very good, and is basically the same as the old fence. The workmen were pleasant and easy to work with. I would hire them again for similar work."

Customers say: Quick response

"Very skilled and professional. Great people. They completed the much needed support of our 20â x15â roofed porch. Porch is 8â above our concrete patio below. Installed a 12â x20â main beam , cut the concrete and poured 3 concrete footers, and installed 3 8x8 high strength support columns. This was completed in 4.5 working days. I would recommend Scalia Development LLC 100%!!!!"

Fencing questions, answered by experts

For fencing projects in Rochester, vinyl and powder-coated aluminum are recommended for their resistance to moisture and temperature swings. Pressure-treated wood offers a classic look but should be installed with galvanized fasteners to prevent rust. Chain link is a practical, budget-friendly option. When choosing materials, consult local suppliers familiar with Rochester's climate and ensure compatibility with city codes and property boundaries.

Helpful?

In Rochester, most fence installation projects require a permit from the City of Rochester's Building Services Division. You'll typically need to submit a property survey, detailed site plan, and pay an application fee. The city enforces strict height limits—4 feet in front yards and 6 feet in side or rear yards—and restricts materials like barbed wire. Always confirm requirements with the Building Services Division before starting to ensure compliance with local code.

Helpful?

Common mistakes in Rochester include building over property lines, neglecting to obtain permits, using shallow posts that shift with frost, and selecting materials unsuited to local weather. These errors can result in code violations or neighbor disputes. To avoid issues, confirm property boundaries with a survey, follow guidance from the City of Rochester's Building Services Division, and use installation techniques designed for Rochester's climate.

Helpful?

Maintaining a fence in Rochester involves seasonal tasks: in spring, inspect for winter damage and reseal wood; in summer, check and lubricate gate hardware; in fall, clear debris and inspect for rust; and in winter, remove snow buildup and apply rust inhibitors. The City of Rochester's Building Services Division also advises checking fence alignment and trimming nearby vegetation to preserve your investment and comply with local regulations.

Helpful?

Rochester's freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow, and salt exposure can damage fencing if not properly addressed. To prevent shifting, set fence posts below the frost line and use concrete footings. Opt for rot-resistant wood or rust-resistant metals, and consider UV-protective finishes. The City of Rochester's Building Services Division recommends regular inspections to catch weather-related wear early and maintain fence stability throughout the year.
