"Very well. Techs were held up but called to alert me and arrived exactly when they predicted. They were quick and efficient, and also very respectful of the home. They finished more quickly then anticipated. The HVAC system is quieter since they performed the work and I notice less dust. I could not be more pleased."

"Affordable Heating and Air is by far one of the most responsive and reasonably priced HVAC contractors that I have dealt with. They were able to work me into their schedule less than 24 hours after I submitted my request and less than 4 hours after talking with someone from the company. They employees were very kind and quickly completed the job."

Let me first start off by saying that I am a young, single woman who moved into her first home less than a year ago. That will hopefully give you some context for the extent of my knowledge when it comes to HVAC units. As with anything, I am always extremely worried about being taken advantage of because of my age and lack of experience.  I called Cape Fear after the first company I contacted recommended that I replace the entire system because it was extremely low on Freon, which caused the motor to over heat, which broke the blower and the compressor (According to him). He told me that I could fix it but it would cost $1000 in Freon, $2200 for a new compressor, $1200 for a new motor, and $700 for a new blower.

I won't say who this provider was, but let's just say they are the only ones in the area with 3k plus reviews. Anyway...

I was a little skeptical with his explanation for what went wrong and intuition told me something was off, so I called for a second opinion. I wasn't impressed with Cape Fear's after hours calling service. The woman was extremely rude to me and I almost didn't use them because of that. However, the woman who called me the next day was extremely friendly, so I decided to give them a chance. I'm so glad I did. They were able to send someone out that day!

I wasn't about to drop 6k lightly. Stephen Rardon came out to my property and showed up 30 minutes early (He called first to make sure this was okay). He was EXTREMELY pleasant through out our entire interation. I could immediately tell he was being honest with me. Stephen didn't know that I had someone else on the property, so his diagnosis was completely independent of that. He determined that the only thing wrong with  my HVAC, aside from it being 21 years old, was that the motor had gone bad, which stopped the blower from working. He told me that he could replace the motor for $500ish and clean it for $50 and that I should be able to get another year or two out of it. He told me absolutely no Freon was needed and that the blower and the compressor were all working fine.

Stephen had the motor on hand, so he replaced it then and there. After a few hours, my HVAC was back up and running. Stephen came in and walked me through the results of the testing he did and advised me that one part may need to be changed in the future, but that everything was working for now. He didn't try to upsell me or use scare tactics to get me to buy anything I didn't need. He provided suggestions of when I should have him back out to look at the unit before the winter and what to expect for replacement in the future.

I wish more companies would realize that being honest not only gets you the immediate business, but it secures future business was well. Cape Fear has a lifetime customer as long as they continue to employ technicians like Stephen.

"This company kicked ARS behind 100 times!!! The owner was extremely knowleadgeable and she was very trust worthy during our initial phone conversation. Made us feel comfortable and sent their sales rep Omar right away even after hours. Omar worked with us and we got an amazing unit for an amazing price. I am a former Marine and this company went above and beyond to take care of a Veteran an his family. The two technicians Jake and Byron were extremely professional, kept everything covered and clean and the installation done was a master piece. Extremely happy with the service and we highly recommend this company if you have any HVAC problems with your current unit. Anthony Delgado"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Replacing an HVAC system does not always include new ductwork. The decision depends on the condition of your existing ducts. If they are in good shape, correctly sized for the new unit, and meet current standards, they can often be reused. However, if the ducts are damaged, poorly designed, or improperly sized, they will likely need to be replaced or upgraded to ensure the new system operates efficiently. An HVAC contractor will assess your ductwork and recommend the best course of action. Typically, ductwork is purchased separately, and a full replacement will add to the overall project cost.

It depends on how fast an HVAC technician can resolve the issue. First, if there's a refrigerant leak, you’ll want to keep small children and pets out of the house. Next, you’ll want to turn off the AC unit to ensure no more freon enters your home. Finally, you’ll need an AC technician pro to come to your home and fix the leak immediately. Ultimately, it’s best to leave your home if you discover a freon leak—the risk of exposure is very high, and it’s not worth risking your health to stay.

Because of the improved efficiency, ACs with higher SEER ratings tend to cool down your home better than models with a lower SEER. Higher-SEER AC units have a higher cooling capacity and a lower energy demand, meaning they may help cool your space faster without running up the electricity bill.

Fixing a leak in an AC unit costs $200 to $1,600, depending on the type of leak and any related damage. But depending on the age and condition of your AC, it might make more sense to replace the AC unit instead of repairing it. If your AC is only a few years old and relatively problem-free, then repairing it is the right call. But if it’s nearing a decade old and has other issues, consider replacing it.

After a while, dust, dirt, and other debris accumulates on an AC unit's coils and filters, making it less efficient and spreading allergens and other air pollutants throughout your home. Cleaning your AC unit will keep it running efficiently, minimizing future breakdowns and improving your indoor air quality.
