"We called Custom Colors to get an estimate to paint the entire lower level of our home, the stair and hallways, and two bedrooms in the upstairs.  Mark came to our house within a few hours of calling to prepare an estimate.  He answered all of our questions and provided a lot of information while looking through the house.  The estimate arrived within a week.  While it was the lowest bid we received, we chose Custom Colors in large part because we felt that the team would do a quality job.  We were not disappointed! Mark told us he would be able to complete the work towards the end of September.  He called at the beginning of the last week of September to schedule the job for later that week.  The crew arrived very promptly on the morning they were scheduled and started work immediately.  They were very careful in our home and made a point to keep things very tidy while working.  It was also a huge bonus that they moved all of the furniture away from the walls for us and returned it to the original position.  Most importantly though, our walls look great!  The paint they used is very high quality and has already withstood a few marks.  Overall the walls are very even; we've only noticed a few very small paint drips.  The foreman on the crew was especially helpful.  After the first day of painting, we noticed a small patch of paint showing through where we had tested some paint samples.  The team repaired this and made sure our other sample areas did not show through before leaving for the day.  Overall, our experience was very positive, and we would definitely work with Custom Colors again.

"They showed up on time, did an amazing job. They also power washed, stained and seal coated my deck and floor of my gazebo. They cleaned up thoroughly at the end of everyday! Danny and his brother and helper honored the estimate they gave us last year... they also warranty their work and gave us a copy. I would highly recommend them to others and cannot say enough good things about them."

"We have been homeowners for 40 years and this was probably the best service we have received as homeowners. Their work involved prep and painting on a three story house. They also worked on three different deck areas. They completed all of the items in the contract and also replaced some rotted wood at the top of our house which was discovered by the workers on the roof. We had some questions during the six day process and they were addressed immediately by the owner of the business. Their work on our house was outstanding. Based on our experience, we would highly recommend C & Z Painting."

"Very professional and efficient. 2 1/2 days start to finish. Three colors: two colors on plank siding and one trim color. Four to five workers on-site and a supervisor at least once a day."

"Jason did some exterior painting of trim on our home as well as deck repair and stain. I followed his suggestion for a stain color and it worked out great. He did a fine job, was punctual, and very neat and tidy. He responded promptly to texts. I look forward to working with him again. He came back and completed a small job for me as well."

"We recently hired Taylor and the crew at True North Craftsman to paint the main level of our home, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. They transformed all of our outdated stained wood trim and molding into a beautiful, crisp white finish that completely modernized our home. The project included painting our walls and tackling challenging 13-foot ceilings, and the quality of their work was exceptional. Their attention to detail was evident in every room—from the careful preparation to the clean lines and flawless finish. They didn’t cut corners and took obvious pride in their craftsmanship. One thing that really impressed us was having a supervisor on-site every day. Communication was excellent, any questions or minor touch-ups were handled promptly, and the crew was professional, courteous, and respectful of our home. They worked efficiently while keeping everything as clean and organized as possible throughout the project. The entire experience exceeded our expectations."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

It’s often best to spray on deck sealer. Sprayers can apply sealant more quickly and evenly than rolling while still enabling you to reach tight spaces. When using a sprayer, always use a low-pressure setting at a close distance to ensure an even application. Avoid using sprayers on windy days.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

For the longest-lasting exterior paint, consider acrylic or enamel (oil-based) paints. Acrylic paints, including acrylic latex and acrylic enamel, are known for withstanding harsh weather and sun exposure. Enamel-based paints are also one of the most durable options available. While latex paint is common, it typically has a shorter lifespan than acrylic or oil-based options. The paint's finish also affects its durability; a higher gloss finish is generally more durable. For resistance to moisture and cracking, matte and satin finishes can be effective, while a high-gloss acrylic or oil-based paint offers a combination of maximum longevity and durability.

There are more pros than cons when staining a deck. Deck stain is more affordable than paint, it protects the wood and allows the natural textures to shine through, and it can revive the appearance of your home. However, deck stain also requires prep work (sometimes days or more), carries more upkeep than a painted deck, and can fade over time if not cared for.

Yes, it is important to wash your deck before painting to ensure the paint applies well and adheres properly. While you don't have to use a pressure washer, it is one of the most efficient cleaning methods. Pressure washing can quickly remove dirt, wood fibers, and flaked paint, getting deeper into the wood than manual scrubbing. You can also clean the deck with a stiff broom and a cleaning solution. Regardless of the method, a clean surface is essential for good paint adhesion. Make sure the deck is completely dry before applying any paint.
