"Custom Colors Painting did an outstanding job painting the exterior of our home. They helped us with our color selections by painting several body and trim color samples on a small area of the house, which really helped us visualize what the house would look like when complete. Mark is very good with color and gave us some great suggestions on enhancing the look of our home. They thoroughly pressure washed the house and caulked all the joints before painting. The crew was very professional, polite, punctual and detail oriented. They kept the work areas clean and organized throughout the project. After the painting was completed, they even cleaned the outside of our windows and raked the footprints out of the mulch around the house. They were great to work with and we are very pleased with the results!"

"They showed up on time, did an amazing job. They also power washed, stained and seal coated my deck and floor of my gazebo. They cleaned up thoroughly at the end of everyday! Danny and his brother and helper honored the estimate they gave us last year... they also warranty their work and gave us a copy. I would highly recommend them to others and cannot say enough good things about them."

"We have been homeowners for 40 years and this was probably the best service we have received as homeowners. Their work involved prep and painting on a three story house. They also worked on three different deck areas. They completed all of the items in the contract and also replaced some rotted wood at the top of our house which was discovered by the workers on the roof. We had some questions during the six day process and they were addressed immediately by the owner of the business. Their work on our house was outstanding. Based on our experience, we would highly recommend C & Z Painting."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.

Beyond liquid rubber, homeowners can use sealants, stains, membranes, or tapes as waterproofing options. Oil-based or water-based sealants soak into the wood, creating a moisture-resistant barrier. Waterproofing stains—available in transparent, semi-transparent, and solid colors—add both protection and style to your deck. For heavy-duty waterproofing, deck membranes and waterproof tapes can be applied under the deck boards to direct water away from the structure below. Whatever method you choose, clean and prep the deck first to ensure the best, longest-lasting results.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

Ideally, it's best to stain your dock once per year. Applying stain doesn't just keep it looking nice and new; it also helps extend the dock’s lifespan. Since you want to ensure water levels are at their lowest, it's best to have this project done by a professional dock repair service in the cooler autumn or early winter months.

Wood stain is typically dry to the touch within 6 to 12 hours, but it is not fully cured at this point. You should wait at least 24 hours before applying a second coat or a protective finish. For surfaces like decks, avoid walking on them for at least 24 to 48 hours, and wait even longer before placing furniture. The full curing process can take from 24 hours to one week, depending on the type of stain. Factors like high humidity and cold temperatures can extend drying and curing times, so it's wise to allow for extra time in these conditions.
